Hello
Thomas Graham Mayes one of a family of 10, 7 brothers and 3 sisters, he was a twin born on 28/07/1866 and emigrated to Australia with his wife and family. His parents were John & Isabella mayes of islandkelly & Magheragall Lisburn Northern ireland
The family tree on this end going well but cannot build any picture for the Australian end, any help appreciated
Thomas also had a younger brother who went to Australia, Robert (Bob) born on the 16th January 1875. he had 4 sons and 2 daughters - Jock, Frank, Rob, Bill, Mab and Belle. They all seem to have emigrated to Australia, although Bill served as a navigator on Lancaster Bombers in the RAF during the war. He won the D.F.C and bar. Robert Mayes died 1953 i think
thanks

There is a digitised Army record for HUGH ROBERT MAYES .
He joined in the 1920's and his birth date was 29/10/1910 and birthplace Antrim Ireland. I cannot quite make out HUGH's occupation.
His father THOMAS GRAHAM MAYES was his next of kin and THOMAS was a storekeeper.
There are addresses and other details of interest in the file.

I cannot believe all this information, woke up this morning to a deluge of info, brillant
Just looking at it I jumped to the ship Affric becuase we have a diary that was published here in Lisburn by the family of Alec Martin. He was an ANZAC and died at end April 1915. He kept his diary on the Affric as he travelled to Aus and with him was his Aunty (Not named) and a lot of little Mayes (Not named), Also a Mr & Mrs Thompson travelled with him. He say he meet his Uncle Tom in Sydney.
His mother was a Mayes.
This info is amazing,

I am working on gathering info for a possible history of the church in magheragall where this family came from. They have strong links on this end to the clergy of the church of ireland.
I am also in contact with a member of the family who is currently doing research into family, i hope he can get on to the site becuase what you have sent is filling the holes in for his tree. I have emailed all the stuff you have sent so far.
The nephew Alec Martin the ANZAC is on the War memorial here in the church and he also has other family connections to Aus.
It is a great help
thank you again

Hi again
thanks for the martin info, it is the individual in question
I know I have asked alot already but I missed the first of the mayes brother who emigrated to Australia, he was an older brother of Thomas Graham and Robert, the two brothers you so kindly helped me with. As mentioned earlier I am working on Magheragall Anglican Church history and the family at that time were very connected to the church. I also have contact with family here who are currently researching and they have asked about this first brother, could you please help with William and info i have is as follows
William Mayes born Sept 1862 but may be recorded five years either side – he visited Australia with Elizabeth his wife around 1892 when their daughter Jane was born in Sydney
he went to California and then returned to Australia around 1912 to 1915 – he also seemed to have lived with his son William Greeley Mayes who also immigrated around the same time – he was born in USA in1894 and is known to have married Carol – All these people lived in NSW – William died in 1943 at Chatswood
thank you
once again

Hello Maghergall, I have lots of information about the Mayes family, less about the Martin family in Australia. I am related to both the Mayes and Martin families and have current contact with the Mayes and Martin families in Northern Ireland (incl clergy). Specifically I am related to the Mayes connection which departed for Australia on the Balranald on 11 March 1924. If you are interested, let me know.

Hi
the Aust. contributors on this post have been very helpful !
As mentioned on previous post I would be interested in the way in which family relates in history to the local parish church,
look forward to hearing from you
Alex Martin wrote a diary when he was on the Affric and it was published after he died in WW1 , he went out with other members of the family,

Hello again, I have in front of me a book of poems and letters by William Mayes - the one who died in 1942 (brother of Robert Mayes who was on the Balranald). The book was published privately in 2008 by the Martin family who refer to William as Uncle William, as did my branch of the Mayes family. I know that part of the Martin family are directly related to your Alex Martin through Samuel and Emily Martin. I think your Alex was Sam's uncle.
I can email one of my Irish cousins and see what I can dig out. They all still know each other. Would that help?

Hi there,
I have just started reading this after a friend asked if I had family history in WWI. Anyway my 1hr of research has led me here and my mum is the granddaughter of Thomas and Jeannie (Snr) Mayes. I have no idea about most of the people that are mentioned in this thread but my mum knows a lot of them and is very interested. She has visited Ireland and knows most of the relatives in Australia so she would love if you would contact me. My nana was Jeannie (jnr) and she died in Sydney in June 2000.
Kookaburragirl I would especially love to hear from you. Mum seems to think that maybe you might be related to Bob or William.
Thanks heaps
