Hi, looked into my family history and thinking I have a death record for my gr gr grandmother, who came from Ireland, I am trying to find out where she would be buried. She died in Measham in 1870, as a Roman Catholic. Unfortunately at that time, there was no catholic church in Measham. Is there a RC section of a graveyard in Measham or would the family have had to take the body further afield to find a RC place of rest? She was Catherine Dugan, died first quarter of 1870.
Any help would be greatly appreciated in finding this plot as I have done lots of detective work and found the grave of one of her sons in Yorkshire in the 1910s.
Thanks,
Travlet

Hi
I think that she would either have been buried in a bit of the parish churchyard or in a nearby Catholic church yard (if there was one). The records for Measham will be here
http://www.leicestershirevillages.com/measham/availablechurchandburialrecords.html
Here is a list of nearby places
http://www.genuki.org.uk/cgi-bin/nearby?CCC=DBY,GRIDREF=SK330110,DISTANCE=5,PN=Measham
I would not fancy trailing through that trying to find alternatives so let's hope she is at Measham! I wondered about Ashby but I think the Catholic church was built later there too.
Here is an old thread about the subject http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,388737.0.html
and I think I read once that ideally a Catholic priest would consecrate the grave site before the burial took place.

Hi Gardener,
many thanks for your response. We have been in touch with someone (finally) in Measham and don't think our ancestor is buried in Measham. SOmeone is looking for burials in Ashby for us and fingers crossed we may have some results. Thanks again,
Travlet
