I have two ancestors, man and wife. Robert Redman born 1854, Burnley, and Jane Alice Redman (nee Rothwell) born 1852, Bolton.
They died in 1925 and 1931 respectively in Grey Street, Burnley, according to death certificates. I have searched Burnley cemetery and Lancs online parish records but cannot for the life of me find where they are buried. I would be so grateful if anybody can tell me how I would locate their burial place. Kind Thanks
Rob

There is a private web site for Burnley cemetry.monumental inscriptions, but it states £6.00 a search ,
best of going to the cemetry office or records office
or even phoning the council office and ask them to check if they are buried there,

Hi,
Is there a chance they could have been cremated :-\
Give the Crematorium a call as you have the death certs, you have the actual date of death, narrowing it down for them to check?
It could then eliminate this to definite burials?
Do you know that they were actually buried?
If so, maybe one of the local churches has an open Graveyard, still in use for burials?
Good Luck!!!
Cancan :)

A check in the Burnley newspaper for their death announcements may help.

Hi,
I have the Burnley Obituary Index, and whilst there are Redman's, none appear with the names your looking for :'(
Sorry!!!!

Thanks for all your help. I just assumed that they were buried. I've had the Burnley MI list costing six pounds and they are not on there, I've also had the office at Burnley cemetery confirm that they are not there either. Perhaps I should look at cremation as an option. If they were cremated it won't really help my search as I'm trying to find out who Jane Alice's parents were, so was hoping for a burial plot. Thanks again :)

Do you have Robert and Jane's mariage certificate? If yes who is her father?

I can find Robert and Jane in 1901 in Burnley but not in earlier census or a marriage BUT I did find this census entry in 1891
10 Layfield St Burnely
Robert ROBERTS H M 37 slater
Jane wife
Lilly 18 card room hand
Theresa 16 bn Bolton
Annie 14
John 22
Elizabeth 9
Robert 6
Alfred 4
Ethel 3
Flora 1
Nellie 5 mths
everyone bar Theresa born Burnley
Ethel and Nellie's births show on www.lancashirebmd.org.uk with mother's maiden name of ROTHWELL
Gibel
To add to the above Robert Redman slater is at 10 Layfield Street in 1901 with wife Jane children John 22 Elizabeth 16 Alfred 14 Ethel 13 and Nellie 11
Apparently the same family but REDMAN in 1901 and ROBERTS in 1891 and 1881 where they are at 29 Gregson Field with Lilly 8, Theresa 4, Annie 4 and John 2.
Most odd!

Your Robert appears to be the son of a John and Elizabeth Redman according to the 1871 census. There he and his parents are shon as born in Cliviger so it might be worth looking there for a burial. Hi father John is a slater and Robert is a slater's apprentice so that seems right.

Burnley Crematorium didn`t open until 1958 and most of the churches with burial grounds in the area are only online up to 1900ish, so I am afraid it would be a case of making a list of them all and then going through the burial records one by one. Not an easy task.
I just noticed that there are 21 Redmans buried at Wheatley Lane Inghamite Chapel, Fence. This graveyard is still in use today by various religions. It may be worth checking it out along with all the rest.

Hi Mo,
I did not know the Crematorium opened so late!! 1958, I have a couple of Ancestors who were cremated 1940's and died in Burnley and just presumed they were cremated in the town.
Back on the hunt now to see where they were cremated, any ideas of any place local?
robsgenealogy good luck in your searching!! You've certainly helped me with my new search!!!

Hi Cancan :),
Most of the Lancashire Crematoriums didn`t open until the 1950`s onwards. I think that it would have been either Carleton (Blackpool) or Manchester in the 1940`s. Where`s my list when I need it? ::)
Good luck with your search Rob, I knew when I saw the thread that it would be Robert and Jane you were after ;D
Night all,
Mo
Added - Rochdale opened in 1938.

Thanks everybody, I'm learning a lot reading through this thread! Yes, it is the same family with the Redman/Roberts conundrum name change as well.
Mosiefish: when you said that most of the church burials are online only up to about 1900, do you mean on Lancs OPC site? I really never knew that, I had no idea and thought they were complete. So, are all the parish records kept at Lancashire Record Office? I suppose it would be steady work but not impossible to map out a geographical area and then check the registers for the burials, given that I have the date of death from the certificates.
Cancan, I haven't given up yet. This couple are the lynch pin in my tree and I've checked Burnley cemetery and Padiham and they are definitely not there. There may be a family plot somewhere, that's what I'm thinking now.

GENuki is a must website to check, under Counties and then Towns and Parishes. Possibly has names and dates of newspapers.
Also Freebmd, Lancashire OPC and UKBMD

Hi ,
I agree with Megran that Genuki is a good port of call as you can choose “Location of the churches marked on a map” and you can stipulate that it has a graveyard: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Burnley/
Scroll down to the bottom of the Church Records.
Yes, I did mean the Lan-opc records. I just had a quick look at them and these are all the burial records that have been transcribed and are online at the moment for Burnley area.
St Peters Burnley – no new graves after 1855/6 – burials up to 1896
All Saints Habergham – Burials up to 1900
Holy Trinity, Habergham Eaves, No burials transcribed online (there was a burial ground)
St. James, Burnley – up to 1856
St. James, Briercliffe – up to 1900
St. John the Divine, Holme in Cliviger, various dates up to 1904
St. John the Evangelist Worsthorne up to 1854
St. Anne Fence up to 1899
Wheatley Lane Methodists up 1837.
St. John the Evangelist Great Marsden up 1896
St. Pauls, Little Marsden up to 1900
Burnley Cemetery up to 2011 and we know they aren`t there.
I have just noticed that Haggate hasn`t made it to the Lan-Opc site yet and I don`t think it has been transcribed for the dates you want on the Briercliffe Society pages either.
Lancashire record office hold some of the records. For an index of churches with graveyards and where the records are kept either locally or at the Record Office see:
http://www.lfhhs-pendleandburnley.org.uk/
Go to local churches on the left and select from map, then start looking for the ones with graveyards.

Thanks for all the pointers. I will have to start getting a list of churches together and make a visit to the area at some point, probably next year. :)
