I have been using Family Tree Maker from the onset (early 1990S). Now all a sudden my 2006 with Vista upgrade running on Windows 7 OS, decides it will not store to any Scrapbook. Up-comes the following: A problem has occurred in writing to your disk, please check that the disk has space available, that it is formatted, and that the drive door is closed. This note is a little out of place as the storage point is my contained hard drive with 200 gig of free space.
Here's hoping someone has an answer, because FTM 2008 and up is not for me.

Hi Crackel,
Welcome to rootschat :D
I am not particularly technically minded but I do use FTM 2006 and my understanding is that it will not run on Windows 7.
I did buy the 2010 version in preparation for replacing my computer (still using XP) but it's still unused on the shelf.
Like you I've been using FTM forever - version 4 before it belonged to Ancestry!
Going back to your query I suspect that you may have to upgrade :'(
Christine
-
I'm using FTM-2005 on Windows 7. You do not have to upgrade FTM-2006 in order to use it on Windows 7.
That error message sounds like a standard message you get when you do not have permission to write to a file as you are not the owner but it looks like it is trying to write to a floppy disk or a writeable CD.
Check your options and make sure the setting are not setup to write yo non-hard drive media.
-
Thanks Christine for your quick response, but I have had 2010 from it's con seption and it is not an easy program to sort out. I do not like it. Guess I am old fashioned.

Thanks also to you Downside: I have looked and the only options I find is under Content and it is not high lighted for use.
F.Y.I. i not 15 minutes ago removed FTM 2006 and re-installed it.

Does Scrapbook work now?
I presume you are using it to contain photographs?
There is no reason it shouldn't work, as I have no problems with FTM-2005.
-
I'm also having issues with FTM 2006 after upgrading to Windows 7. My issue is with the production of books. I did contact the makers of FTM and you have to download a free something or other (can't remember what it was called). There was an error message something like "FTM executable has stopped working....." I have to get back onto them because doing as they suggested got rid of the message, but I still can't produce books, or in fact even edit ones I've already done. It now says "Preview is already running".
They responded within 24 hrs but I haven't had time to do the subsequent follow up.
Anyone else had the same issues?
Alison ???

Downside: It does not work after the new install. Yes to using it to store photos, census, deeds, Etc.
That is correct, there is no reason it should not work, as it did from the onset, purchase in 2006, until just a couple of months ago.
I am going to look for a old back up and see if it will store in scrapbook. Reason for this action will be to determine if problem is in software or family file.

Hi
I had similar problems with FTM 2005 on WIndows 7. I solved my issues by setting it to run in XP compatibility mode.
-
I have just started using ftm 2005 because my family tree genealogy suite version 4 (this may be the same as the one that Christine referred to) would not install on my computer. Apparently it would not install because the program is 32 bit and the computer is 64 bit. ::) So now I am just trying to get used to the ftm 2005 program ................ getting there.
Hope you get it sorted crackel as it can be so frustrating.

I solved my issues by setting it to run in XP compatibility mode.
That's interesting.
If I right click my desktop icon and select Properties and then click on the Compatibility tab the check box next to:
Run this program in compatibility mode for:
Windows XP SP3 (greyed out)
is not checked - so I presume I am running the program in Windows 7 mode and it all seems to work?
Apparently it would not install because the program is 32 bit and the computer is 64 bit.
That's not true - I have many old programs (16 and 32 bit) working on my Windows 7 computer. In fact most of the programs running on your computer are 32 bit. Apart from Internet Explorer, I doubt if you have any 64 bit programs running on your computer.
-

Yes, mine seemed to be working too, but then I realised some options I only use occassionally would fail - in particular exporting reports to PDF.
I should have said that I'm running 32 bit W7.
-
The PDF problem was the reason why FTM-2005 would not work on Windows Vista and then later Windows 7 - everything else was OK.
To get around this they issued a patch to fix the problem. I think the Vista patch is good for Windows 7 as well.

I have just tried again to install 'family tree genealogy suite version 4', this message appears -
Unsupported 16-Bit Application
The program or feature "\??\E:\Setup.exe" cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit versions of Windows.
I would be open to any suggestions of how to install this because I do prefer to use this program as opposed to ftm 2005.

Ewan: I have purchased just about every version from the first that Bonderbund produced to present. I believe you will find the program style of Version 4 is the same all the way up to FTM Version 2006. I am having my problems with FTM2006 in my computers (Windows 7) I am going to have to use my FTM2010. I am tired of putting in data only to have it not store in the program or have the program fault.
Oh by the way folks the only thing that the ancestry would say is:
Family Tree Maker 2006 has some compatibility issues with Windows 7 that could be causing the error message which you have received. Please download the patch from the following article to resolve this issue:
Answer Title: Family Tree Maker 2005, 2006 & 16 Update for Windows Vista & Windows 7
Answer Link: http://pastftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/pastftm.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2777
Needless to say it does not work. I also tried all the other suggestions to no avail, however I really appreciate the sincere attempts to solve my problem. I am still hanging in there. Right now my conclusion is my file maybe corrupt, if it is oh s__t. Crackel

Hi Crackel
Have you got permission to write to the file?
Go to C:\Proram Files (x86)\Family Tree Maker 2005
if that is where you .ftw file is stored, if not then navigate to where you keep it.
Right click the .ftw file and select Properties and then click the Security tab.
Make sure that under the Allow column everything is ticked - especially the Write permission box. The Special Permission row should not be ticked.
-
Thanks to everyone for the help attempts. Nothing has worked, so I am going to "bite the bullet" and start using 2010 YUK!
I am afraid if I don't get away from 2006 I am going to loose some if not all of my file.
Thanks a million to all!!!

Crackel, the Family Tree Genealogy Suite Version 4 that I purchased about 7 years ago was by Global Software Publishing Limited, but unfortunately the ftm 2005 deluxe edition that I have just gained does not have the same program style that The Family Tree Genealogy Suite Version 4 has. It is a different format entirely, which is fine once I can find my way around it. Good luck with the 2010 and hope you get on alright with it.
I was just hoping to be able to install The Family Tree Genealogy Suite Version 4 on this different computer but as mentioned it will not install because the computer is a 64 bit and the program is 32 bit.

Most programs running on Windows 7 64 bit are 32 bit programs.
If you have a 64 bit program then in theory it will run a bit faster than a 32 bit version.
-

Hello again downside, appreciate your time with this. I am getting the message as above when trying to install this program, I don't know how to get round this problem, my guess is that I just will not be able to install this 32 bit program on the 64 bit computer.
-
So it is a 16 bit rather than a 32 bit application?
Which edition of Windows 7 are you using?
If you are using Professional or Ultimate then you should still be able to run the program.
If you are using Home Premium then it might be the problem, although there should be a compatibility feature to allow you to run older versions of programs.
-
Downside I really don't know where I got the idea that this program was a 32 bit application ::), there is nothing on the box the program came in to indicate this so I presume that because I was using a 32 bit computer when I installed the program initially that was what was in my head!
I am using Windows 7 Home Pemium, so do you know how I could find/use the compatibility feature which may allow me to run older versions of programs please?
If this fails, it is not the end of the world, I will persevere with the new program, 2005 deluxe edition I have gained.
Thanks

Hi Ewan
Click on Start and in the dialog box type:
Program Compatibility
and select
Run programs made for previous versions of Windows
and follow the wizard's steps.
-
Thanks again downside for your help.
I am having a problem doing this, I have followed your instructions which were straightforward. I then came to the question:
'Select the program you're having problems with'
followed by:
'if you don't see your program, select Not Listed top browse to the program file' ...... Which I did.
The next question was ... 'enter the program file's location'
I am now completely lost! as surely there won't be a location because I can't install the program ???
Ewan
PS
Crackel, I am so sorry for hijacking your thread here. ::)
-
Point it to your CD drive i.e.
E:\setup.exe
and see what happens.
-
Ewan you have done no harm! What your doing is getting an answer to a problem with FTM, hope you succeed. Stick with Downside, I am impressed with his apparent knowledge of computer software workings. I don't like to strike out against any THING/BODY, however sense the Ancestry take over of the software portion of our genealogy, the only thing they are interested in is M O N E Y !!!
-
Ewan excuse the mis-spelling of "since".
-
Crackel, I don't know what some of us would do without the help of downside, really.
Okay then I typed in E\:Setup.exe and after clicking on 'next' as told by the wizard I got this message - 'The specified path does not contain a valid program. Please select a valid program (ending with .exe).'
???
I tried typing it in lower case, upper case to see if there was any difference. ???
Ewan
-
::) ::)
... E:\setup.exe
not E\:setup.exe
R
-
R, thanks for your help as well.
I did type as downside suggested, and then I typed variations of it.
When I replied to downside I had obviously mis typed it to read E\:setup.exe, but meaning E:\setup.exe
I am intrigued though to know what happens next when the 'specified path is typed in' and it contains a valid program.

Hi
If you "Explore" the cd you will notice (hopefully only one) the .exe used to (initiate) install.
On the FTM CD I have here it is
"deluxe_flashUK.exe"
OR
If you "Explore" the cd you will notice (hopefully only one) the "autorun, inf" file.
Rightclick it and you will see something like
[autorun]
OPEN=deluxe_flashUK.exe
Of course the OPEN maybe pointing to an exe in another folder
OPEN=D:\FTM\deluxe_flashUK.exe
OR
E: may not be your CD Drive
???

On the CD to install it has - D:\Setup.exe (substitute D for the letter of your CD drive if different) So when trying to install this program I have substituted the D for an E.
R not sure what you mean by right click, what do I right click?
-
Apologies.
Rightclick it (the "autorun.inf" file) and open it with notepad................

Thanks R
I am beginning to think now that installing this program on a 64 bit computer is not going to be possible.

According to the following link
http://pastftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/pastftm.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=2777
This is taken from that site:
"Family Tree Maker 2005, 2006 & 16 Update for Windows Vista & Windows 7
Question
I recently updated to Windows Vista or Windows 7, but now I find certain functions in Family Tree Maker (specifically PDFs, like when I export a book) stop working. Do you have an update to fix this problem?
Answer
Most features on Family Tree Maker are unaffected by the newer versions of Microsoft Windows, Windows Vista & Windows 7 . However, certain aspects (like exporting a view, book, or tree to PDF) will not function without an important update for your copy of Family Tree Maker. This update is completely free, and steps for updating your program are given in this article.
Note: These versions of Family Tree Maker are not Vista or Windows 7 64 bit compatible. This article and patch will only work for Vista or Windows 7 32 bit. "

Alison :'(

Thank you Alison for the link.
So it does seem unlikely that I will be able to install Family Tree Genealogy Suite 4 onto a 64 bit computer.
I will press on with FTM 2005 and patiently get my head around it.
Thanks for all the help.

That's okay Ewan,
I still haven't solved the problem I have with it. I did contact them through that site and we did make progress, but work intervened and I haven't got back to it.
I still can't view the books I've made. It tells me "preview is already running".
Hopefully, I'll get there in the end.

Alison ???
I did get there in the end with some wonderful help from the people at Ancestry support. It took quite a few emails back and forth. It turns out I was missing a FTM printer driver.
I'm just so pleased the thousands of hours of work won't amount to nil, if I can't produce pdfs and subsequently books.
