I have in my possession, a letter dated 1967 that has been passed on to me by a family member, it is from The Ministry of Defence regarding my Maternal Grandfather.
It gives what looks like his WW1 Naval record number but I am unable to make head or tail of the National Archives search facilities.
I am afraid I am a bit of a technophobe. I have tried searching but have had no luck. He obviously served in the Royal Navy but N.A seem not to have any records nor do Findmypast , so I would presume I am doing something very wrong in my searches.
Would it be ok to post it on here ?, it has a fair bit of information on it and he died in 1944 .

1.In reply to your letter dated 23, March 1967, I am able to tell you that the above named entered the Royal navy at Chatham on 15/7/1914, and served to 28/4/1920, when he was invalided from the service.
During his service he served on HMS Yarmouth, HMS Hannibal, HMS MImosa and HMS Lobelia.
2.He was awarded the Victory medal and British War Medal in respect of his service during the 1914- 1918 World War.
3. I hope this information will be of interest to you
Yours faithfully

Wow Thank You Ady.
Managed to download it and , what a suprise , I now have his birthplace ( we knew he was born in Ireland but not where) and his date of birth.
I really do appreciate the help , I would have been still trying next year as I have been popping in and out of the NA for about 5 years with no luck.
Thank You again I am so pleased.
