Hi
I am not sure if anyone can help me but i am trying track down one of my ancestors. I have a birth certificate of my great nan and i am trying to find her mothers tree.
On the birth cert (Gertude Skinner b 1886 Gloucester) her father Henry Skinner, mother Jane Flora Skinner late Macdonald formerly Skinner. I have found both mother and daughter on the 1901 census and they are both in a workhouse in Newcastle. I cant find any of them on the 1891 census, any marriages for Henry and Jane or deaths. Any help please! Thanks

'Flora' and 'McDonald' are both Scottish names - have you tried Scotland?
-
Sorry on the 1901 census it says she was born in Ireland
-
Civil registration of births in Ireland started in 1864. Have you found Jane Flora in the 1911 census yet? We can't do lookups for the 1911 England/Wales census but it sometimes gives a more exact place of birth than 'Ireland.'

I couldnt find her on the 1911 census either, i found gertrude her daughter but she is married to my great grandfather then and has children so not sure what happened to either Henry or Jane?

Hello,
does Gertrude name Henry as her father on her marriage certificate?
1901 has
1)Gertrude Skinner 13 yrs b abt 1888 Gloucester with Jane in the workhouse as you say
2)Gertrude E Skinner 16 yrs b abt 1885 Gloucester, a servant in Shropshire
best wishes

Hi
Yes Henry is named on her marriage cert. but is marked as deceased and this is in 1906 when she married Edward Williams
-
Does Henry have an occupation?
Is there an address on the birth certificate?
It's odd isn't it- the birth is there but that's it :-\
-
Well on birth cert it says henry is a fish hawker? then on marriage it says theatrical.
The address on the birth cert is Star Inn, Alvin Street, St Johnm Cloucester so it looks like they dont have own house

Jane is there! Your great-grandfather Edward Williams is the Head of the family. All the relationships described in the census refer back to him. So, his mother-in-law, Jane Asbury, has to be Gertrude's mother. Where or when she acquired the surname Asbury is not very clear - BMDs don't show a marriage. Also her son John Asbury, Gertrude's brother and Edward's brother-in-law, reportedly born in Leicester in 1893 can't be found in 1901 census or BMDs. There are two Astbury boys in Cottage Homes Marston Green Coleshill Warwickshire in 1901 census, William aged 11 and Tom aged 6.
But you do have the added information that Jane was born in Country Cavan Ireland, in 1853.
What a completely mysterious family! ???

Ahh I see! I have noticed that there are a lot of visitors on the 1911 census and a John MacDonald is on the list.
As Jane formally had a name of MacDonald, i wonder if he is a connection in some way. Very strange about the number of name changes and no marriage for any hmmm
