Title: Wolsingham P.R.s - John Proud Death 1856

Please can I have a lookup for the death of John Proud in 1856. He lived in Bishop Auckland but was buried in Wolsingham in 1856. He would have been 50/60 years old. He was born in 1794 in Stanhope but not chr until 1808.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Hi,

There doesn't seem to be a burial for John PROUD in Weardale in 1856 on FreeBMD although it is supposedly 100% transcribed for that year

There is a Monumental Inscription in Wolsingham

John PROUD of Bishop Auckland died at Redcar 1861, Jane the wife of John PROUD died at Bishop Auckland 1856.

Could this be him??

Unfortunately this isnt my John. I've `lost' my John between the 1851 and 61 censuses. In 1851 he was living with son John and daughter Sarah along with Sarahs illeg son James. By 1861 John junior was married, Sarah had died in 1856 and James (apprentice tailor) was 13 and  living with a family called Horne at Dans Castle. Hard as I try, I cannot find John senior in 1861 so presume him to have died between the 51 and 61 census. Thanks for looking for me.

He was in Crook in 1851

There is a John PROUD buried in Crook, St. Catherine 19 Feb 1854 aged 59. Do you have any reason to believe he died, or was buried, in Wolsingham??

There is also a burial in Crook, St. Catherine for Sarah PROUD on 5 Jun 1855 aged 34.  Could this be his daughter or are you sure she died in 1856?

Wow thats amazing!!

I'm certain thats the John Proud I'm looking for as he was born in Ireshopeburn in 1794. I've been trying to find him for ages, even Bishop Auckland Reg Off couldn't find him. I thought he might have died in Wolsingham because his grandson was living there in 1861 census. You've got the right Sarah Proud as well, thats fantastic.
How did you find John, is there a MI for him?
I'm so pleased that you've found this, it's taken a good 5years or more. Cant wait to send for the death cert!

Hi Nige.,

Pleased to have been some help.  The entries are on National Burial Index. I don't have MIs for Crook so can't say if there is an inscription.  The Parish Records will be in Durham.  As you say, the death certificate might be a good idea.
