Title: Paskins Family Harrietsham
Post by: Dorking123 on Monday 19 September 11 13:48 BST (UK)
I am interested in a Samuel Paskins who was born abt 1777 in Broadwater by Worthing in Sussex

I know he was a lawyer in Harrietsham near Maidstone in Kent dying there in 1855

His wife Charlotte was ten years younger & died in 1868

As far as I can make out they had a number of children

Robert 1805, Christopher 1810, Thomas 1813, James 1816, Samuel 1821, Charlotte 1824 & William 1827

Only the last  three of these appear in the IGI so I am unable to confirm their parents without recourse to the parish records in Maidstone

Samuel (1777 to 1855) had a sister Jane (1765 to 1836) who is my direct ancestor - she lived in Cobham near Gravesend

Please can anyone help me with this family

Thanks

Gerry

Paskins is not a common name in Kent.

The Mid Kent Marriages Index 1754-1911 only has 8 entries for the surname PASKINS

Hello Again Jean

There are of course a lot of Marsh familes in East Kent

Mine are the Curling Marsh branch - my direct ancestor is Thomas Curling Marsh born Dover April 1789 died Jan 1872 also Dover

He was Town Crier of Dover for many years

Gerry

Hi Gerry.
My Marsh family are from Lamberhurst later Marden Kent, with a Bridger Marsh born c 1730 died 1805.
My Pack family came from the Harrietsham area and I was married at Cobham!

             Regards Jean.

PS.

Have you looked at the Cityark site? Parish records for Cobham are there but not sure if the dates you want are there on line.

Title: Paskins Ancestry
Post by: Dorking123 on Tuesday 20 September 11 11:15 BST (UK)
I am related to half of Cobham in the 19th century but no Marsh branch!

My names are Wickens, Bennett, Copelin, Cuckney, Rapley & a lot of others

One of my Cuckney ancestors was born Jane Paskins - she first married a Richard Cuckney then a John Copelin (but after she had had 5 children with him first)

I have been trying to find out for years how she came to be in Cobham - I suspect when she was widowed in 1792 she went with her three infant children to live with her brother Samuel who was a lawyer in the Maidstone area which isn't a million miles from the Cobham/Cuxton area where all her descendants lived

I am well familiar with the CityArk site thanks!

Gerry

Well, Robert PASKINS a "sawyer" in Harrietsham 1851 census says he was born in Sittingbourne ............ would this be the same Robert?  There is a baptism at Sittingbourne of Robert son of "James" and Charlotte PASKIN 3 Apr1812 (of Smarden) http://www.familysearch.org ............ perhaps James is a mistranscription of Samuel?

James and Thomas PARKINS bp 7 Jan 1816 sons of Samuel and Charlotte might also be worth looking at http://www.familysearch.org ............... you can check the film number via the library catalogue on the old Familysearch site to see which parish(es) it covers.

Thanks Casalguidi

I spent some considerable time researching the family following my post on the 20th September

I am as sure as you can be that Samuel Paskins (abt 1777 to 1855) was my ancestor Jane's brother though quite how he got to Kent from Worthing is a bit of a mystery

A lot of his descendants in Kent were also Sawyers

I have never been able to find his wife Charlotte's (abt 1787 to 1868) maiden name or of course the marriage record

It was probably around 1808

She gives her birthplace as Maidstone in later census returns

Gerry

I am a descendant of Robert Paskins (Paskin and living in Smarden KENT at birth) Parents listed as James PASKIN and Charlotte. He was listed as born 3/4/1812 Sittingbourne Kent (Harrietsham is the parish)  & on the census he was born 1811 or near to) I have found a Charlotte Williams born in Lenham sub district of Harrietsham on 18/12/1791 but have not found a marriage or death for her.  I was also under the opinion that it may have been Samuel and Charlotte as I found them both on the census and 10 years apart in the same area. Robert I think has a brother Thomas born 1813 (Census) and then perhaps a James follows born 1816. They all come from Harrietsham area and perhaps Lenham a sub district as their home as it is mentioned often for these Paskins in census. Robert had many children including a William which is my ancestor that came across to Sydney Australia.  My Grandfather is a Paskins as my mother.I have haunted the websites about James and I also am wondering if perhaps Samuel called himself James...as in Samuel James. The problem is not all Kent parishes have information on websites that far back. I have found a birthdate for Samuel Paskings B. 5/1/1777 Broadwater Sussex and father James PASKINGS and Ann. That name James seems to pop up quite often as James born in 1816 had a son James who had a son James an all on the census. So James Paskings had a Samuel (James) perhaps who had a James who had a James. We also have a Samuel Robert and a Robert Samuel from William down...coincidence?

According to my records Samuel Paskins (1777 to 1855) married Charlotte nee Gee (1787 to 1868) on the 30th May 1807 in All Saints Maidstone

They had seven children I know of namely

Christopher 1810, Robert 1811, Thomas 1813, James 1816, Samuel 1821, Charlotte 1824, & William 1827

All reached adulthood with the probable exception of Samuel baptised 22nd April 1813

All were born in Harrietsham with the exception of Robert (Sittingbourne) & Thomas (Hollingbourne)

Robert (1811) married Ann nee Coomber on the 13th October 1832 & they had eleven children

Their son William (1839 to 1917) did indeed emigrate down under - he married an Elizabeth Mary Wood (1864 to 1921) in Queensland in about 1890

I have a lot of detail on this familiy - both ancestors & descendants - far too much to clutter up this site - if you want more detailed info please send me a private message via this site to give me your personal email address

You are correct about Samuel Paskins (1777 to 1855) who was a sawyer originating from the Worthing area of Sussex

This is my second reply and need three to send a private message. However, William arrived into Brisbane, Queensland Nov. 1862 on the Conway, assisted immigrants. He was 22,wife Sarah Ann nee Robinson 19, with son William 2. They were listed as farm hands from KENT and perhaps the name was listed on the log book onboard as Paskens. I have a copy of that original log book. He may have married later in life if Sarah passed on.I have her birth and their marriage details. Their next child Samuel born two years later in Taroom Ql'd...comes down to my family. Thanks for info.
