Hi, could anyone help me find this family,
Thomas Bennett  b1876, Sarah Jane b 1879, Margaret Ann b 1897 all born Whitehaven.
I found them on the 1911 Census and they are all down as Bent, there is also another 4 children             Thomas b 1902, John b 1905, Sarah Jane b 1907 born whitehaven & Peter b 1910 Durham. So they were in Cumberland till 1907.
A member of the family said that they did change their name from Bennett to Bent but I still cannot find them in other Census under either name.
Sarah Jane's maiden name was Kerr,  On Margaret Ann's Marriage cert she is down as Bennett.
 Any help appreciated

Don't know if this is the same family but worth a try-
 1881-
 105 Main st Parton Whitehaven
John Bent 38 no occupation Parish recipient
 Margaret 32 wife
 Mary H  9
 THOMAS 7
 James 1
 Edward Emmes 41 boarder
 James W Mullen  23 boarder
 1891
 11 Pattinson Buildings Whitehaven
 John  Bent 48 labourer
 Margaret  42
Mary H 20     All born Whitehaven
 Thomas 18
 Margaret J 6
Jane Daily 71 lodger b Ireland. Is it possible  that they changed from Bent to Bennett then back again, or are they possibly in Ireland in 1901(if Jane Daily is any relation) as I can't find any of them as Bent in 1901? By the way, where were they in 1911?

I too found Thomas Bent in 1881 & 1891 census,
I found the marriage at Whitehaven in 1895 between Thomas Bennett and Sarah Jane Carr.
Sarah Jane and her parents Thomas & Bridget were living in Whitehaven in 1881and in 1891, interestingly both Thomas & Bridget were born in Ireland. Thomas was a fireman in 1881 and a labourer in 1891.
No luck finding them in 1901.

Had a look in the irish 1901 census, plenty of Thomas Bennett, but no Sarah or Margaret living with them, there was one Thomas Bent but again no Sarah or Margaret with him.
I did find this, probably a coincidence but I found a Thomas, Sarah J and a Margaret A Bennett living in Durham, giving places of birth as Durham. Could this be them or could it be a completely different family?
Sorry I am probably complicating matters.

Hi Carol, Aimme seems to think that Thomas and Sarah were in Cumberland till 1907 as 3 children were born in Whitehaven.Wish she would come back online to give us an address for 1911.
 Best wishes Julie  :D

They were in Houghton le Spring, Co.Durham in 1911 - it's no good looking for Thomas as his name was crossed out.  Look for Sarah Jane BENT aged 4.  Thomas BENT 38 can be found in Sunderland. (This can be found using the 1911 search facility)

 Here is their marriage

 Marriages Jun 1895
 BENNETT    Thomas        Whitehaven    10b   1032
CARR    Sarah Jane         Whitehaven    10b   1032

Thanks Geoff will have a look

Their child Sarah Jane would not be born in 1901, so that will not help the 1901 search.
Is it unusual for families to change their names?

That rather depends on how literate they were. ;)

Some COAN relatives of mine were registered as CONE as late as the 1890s.

Someone realised with this one and it was amended -
 Births Mar 1893
 CONE  Thomas     Whitehaven  10b 661
 Births Mar 1893
 COAN Thomas Whitehaven 10b 660A

 and

 CONE  Patrick     Whitehaven  10b 687
 Deaths June 1896

				Hi Julie ,Carol & Geoff
The Bennetts Carol found in1901 are not the right ones.
The marriage of Thomas & Sarah Jane looks to be the right one although Sarah's  maiden name was Kerr but it could have been spelt wrong I suppose.
Thomas and Sarah Jane had another child in 1914 Evelyn Bent mmn Kerr. This is a confusing family they seem to like changing their names.
Margaret Ann Bennett m Thurston Vose in 1922. They had 6 children, 1st child mmn Bennett, 2nd & 3rd mmn Bent, 4th mmn Bennett, 5th & 6th mmn Bent. I just cannot understand why they did this. I do'nt know if I am looking for Bennett / Bent, Kerr / Carr ?. My only hope was to find Thomas,Sarah Jane & Margaret in 1901 or I might send for the marriage cert for Thomas & Sarah Jane
 Cheers

Struck a blank today, cannot find this family in 1901.
Thomas also had a sister called Margaret who eventually went to Canada I think, any chance Thomas & Sarah went over, or even America, after Margaret's birth 1896, and were back in this country by 1902 for birth of next child, because there was a six year gap between 1st and 2nd child., therefore travelling could be a possibility.
Sorry I do not have ancestry worldwide so unable to check this.
 Just a suggestion.
It is interesting that quite a few people in Whitehaven came over from Ireland like Sarah's parents.

				Hi Carol
Appologies for not replying sooner, I don't think they did go to America. As for the gap in the ages of the children by 1911 they had had 10 children but 5 had died. I think I will have to send for their marriage cert .
 Thanks for your help
 Geoff.
Thanks for telling me Thomas was in Sunderland 1911,  I thought that because his name was crossed out maybe he was at work. I had a look and it never occured to me he could be in hospital.
 Cheers Aimme
