I have made a breakthrough recently in my Hogg family from scotland, who were all nurserymen.
I have Adam Hogg b.1803 berwick (brother of my direct line) who in 1841 -1871 was a nurseryman in Newcastle.
the 1871 census has him at 'Hoggs Nursery', with 4 acres. this falls between Armstrong street and Cruddas Lodge, Elswick. looking at district no 26 enumeration this seems to be present day Scotswood rd area. can anyone help pinpoint where the nursery was exactly? and any further info on it.
Adam died in 1876 - i have the probate record - but his son william mentioned, also nurseryman seems to be elsewhere in the 1881 as a 'farmer'

hi Diddy,i had a look in Kelly's 1879 Directory(the earliest one i have on cd),no sign of a Hoggs nursery in it but there was a William Hogg nurseryman at 233 Market,Newcastle, that was all it had for the address.

thanks i did check the historical directories online and found 1855 Directory of Newcastle - Adam Hogg, nurseyman & Seedsman, scotswood road.
also google books: the gardners magazine 1830: For the best bouquet of Double Georginas, and for the best bouquet of Flowers, silver medals to Mr. Adam Hogg, at Mr. Falla's, Gateshead nursery. The quality of the various articles exhibited was very superior.
now i know where dad & I got our green fingers!!

It sounds as if this was the precursor to the later Cruddas Park recreation ground on the N side of Scotswood Rd in Low Elswick, now occupied by Cruddas shopping centre and several high rise blocks. There was a lodge on the Scotswood road western corner. The area has been redeveloped a couple of times. Very likely the blocks have been demolished too!

Diddy,
Did you get Adam's Berwick's birthplace from a census ?
On censuses I browsed his "where born" was Belsay, Northumberland and Kelso Roxburgh ?
Michael

Hi Michael - yes on census seems to vary but from that found him on SP as Berwick - the family seem to have moved there between Kelso and Northumberland. def him as both parents named.
sure there must be other children but have checked everywhere i can think of - SP /IGI/BMD non -conf reg / LDS. not gone through BTs yet!!
