Post by: sallyebond on Friday 16 September 11 13:16 BST (UK)
Hello,

I am looking for information on Mary Ann Howarth, convicted in the Lancashire Courts of Quarter Sessions on 9 July 1832, transported to Australia for 14 years.

Any information would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Hi sallyebond,

Before 1839 Manchester cases were tried at the Lancashire Quarter Sessions (Salford Hundred).

The Quarter Sessions records for Lancashire are held at the Lancashire Record Office.

Manchester hold some Calendars of Prisoners tried at the Quarter Sessions of the County of Lancaster (Hundred of Salford), 1821-1840 (ref: GB127.L27) at the Greater Manchester County Record Office.

You don't say where in Lancashire, so have given these above, as they are the only ones I know of at present.

Currently the Lancashire Records Office is closed, but you can email.

I'd email the Lancashire Records, they maybe able to tell you what they have available in regards to information, or if it is available to order, though this can be expensive.

If you can hang on until October when it opens you could place a posting for a lookup if anyone is visiting!

The Criminal Registers show her as Mary Ann Haworth, but nobody is certain how to spell the surname.

"Larceny, before convicted of Felony" means she was a repeat offender. She should appear in the registers for earlier Sessions. The convicts above and below in the register, though having similar descriptions, received much lighter sentences, so I'd guess that she was stealing alone, or she was the only one in the gang to be caught.

The clerk did divide the registers to show the places of trial. The section Mary Ann is in does not have "Liverpool" or "Salford" mentioned, so probably relates to Lancaster.

This would indicate a very rough geographical location for her arrest - Lancashire, from Furness in the north west to, say, Chorley in the south, with Colne in the east.

I would expect only high-profile suspects such as murder cases to be transferred to Lancaster once courts in Liverpool and Salford were established.

Lancashire Record Office seem to have something but I can't tell from the search how much detail it would contain:-

QSP/2965 Salford Midsummer 1832 111 Bill of costs for the prosecution of Mary Ann Howarth

So I would definitely following Cancan's suggestion and email them.  Even though they are going through a major closure and refurbishment, they are still answering emails.

Hi there,

Confirming some details, and hopefully giving some further clues as to her origins...

Convicted at the [Lancaster Quarter Session for a term of 14 years on 9 July 1832.
The Diana departed UK 4 Dec 1832.

NSW SRO gives she was Born Dublin, and her Trade as “Factory all work” as per the index for her Ticket of Leave, which shows her T o L was issued in the NSW district of Yass in 1841 (so perhaps some remission for good conduct).
