In the process of getting votes for and against whether the Rootschat May challenge should be completely random or not I recieved a PM suggesting that we should investigate a particular brickwall for someone who has been very helpfull to others but is now a bit stuck.
Since I thought that a very nice thought (I will leave the authoress of the PM annon. in case she does not want the publicity I thought I would advertise the brickwall here so that more people might see it.
It involves a Vigers family John b 1810 who married Sarah Ethelreda in 1830 in St Georges Camberwell.
They moved to the states by 1833, but then back again by 1834 and I believe the problem is in finding any trace of the family in America (where Sarah possibly died) or in the 1851 census in London.

It would be great if someone can help with this family,

Emily, what a good idea.
Found this site - mainly re: the Donkin Family but with some information on a SARAH VIGERS - born 1808 - Stoke on Trent. Married Charles Donkin Dec 1827 in Fulford Staffs, but... travelled to New York around 1830s. Could this be John's sister ? And if it is, did they travel out with John and Sarah Ethelreda?

Found plenty of Vigers, but not the ones you are looking for sorry. They seem to travel a lot as I found them on a ship to NZ in 1851. A John Vigers was on the 1841 census for Lamerton Devon, but once again the wrong John :'(

I only picked this up because I thought it might work - but I can't find a birth to go with it - maybe it can be kept on the back burner !

This can't be the same Sarah Hickman - as I have found her alive in 1881 - at 71 Blenheim C, Kensington, Middlesex, aged 48. (RG 11 piece 0035 folio 51 p.45)
It's definitely right, as it gives her place or birth as New York.

I was checking the historical directories and I found a listing for
Higginson and Vigers - both in the Post office London Directory and the Court Directory but it was dated 1882
Charles Robert Vigers in each case
3 Westminster Chambers Victoria Street SW
also John Vigers
3 Portugal St Grosvenor St W
I don't know why but I went back to the Berks FHS and I found a Bunch of Higginsons John 1790
Thomas 1822
Ralph 1864
Harold 1899
I wonder if they are related to the Vigers and maybe John and Thomas Higginson are contempories of John Vigers - but that's as far as I can go today -
I can't think how to tie them up - can anybody else ? - after all it is Friday the 13th................
-
Heres something else interesting - then I'm done for the day..............

I received this in the mail yesterday from the Royal College of Surgeons of England
It's a photo copy of a page of The British Medical Journal dated Nov 4th 1916
Obituary
Dr. H.V. Hickman died on October 16th aged 54 at his residence in Wanstead Essex where he had a practised for twenty five years. He was educated at the City of London School and at Guy's Hospital and took the diplomas of M.R.C.S. and L.R.C.P. in 1890 and the degree of M.B. Lond. in 1891.
At Guy's he held the appointments of house - physican and obstetric resident resident and was subsequently ophthalmic assistant for two years.
He represented his hospital at many cup - ties in the three quarter line and held the second for the mile at the inter hospital sports.
He was a member of the British Medical Association and had held the office of chairman of the Walthamstow Division
At the time of his death he was Anaesthetist to the Walthamstow Hospital and medical officer to 5th Battalion Essex ( Volunteer ) Regiment in the work of which he took the warmest interest
A man of fearless honesty and intense kindness of heart - his death is a very keen sorrow to his colleagues and patients.
NB - I sent this to Mike yesterday but thought it would be good to post - just in case anybody else needs the info on this family .......!!!! I have also been trying to find out about his role with "The Essex" - I think probably at NA - there would be some paperwork but haven't found anything yet!!

I'm quite overwhelmed by the help that you and others have posted on the Vigers family. I am piecing together all the separate bits of information, and I think I can build a fairly full picture.
Thanks so much for all the research you have done - you have looked in places that I would never have thought of searching.

Hi Mike
