Title: COMPLETED: In danger of loosing this forever: Restoration and dating please
Post by: mowi on Thursday 15 September 11 12:26 BST (UK)
This is my Grandmother who was born 1874. As you can see, the photograph is now very faded so I was wondering if there is anyone who can save it for me!

Thankyou

Mowi

Hi Mowi, and welcome to Rootschat  :)

My first impression is that this is a photo taken in the 1880s, as the lady's clothing is of that era.  How sure are you of her identification?  It would seem to be a lady born some time in the 1860s...

Cheers
Prue

Hello Prue
I have always thought this was my Grandmother born 1874.This photograph has always been with me and my Mother before me .As my mother died when I was 11 years,I just thought this was her Mother.

Agree with Prue,mid-late 1880's,women didn't dress like this in the 90's which it would have to be for a woman born 1874.
The cardstock is also mid-late 1880's.

Could it be it was your mother's grandmother rather than mother Mowi.

That's a great result! Way better than I thought anyone would be able to get it. A few years ago I had a local photo shop have a go at restoring it and all they did was alter the contrast a bit to make it stand out more which didn't make it look much better.

Thanks to Carolyn and Emjaybee for your efforts they are very much appriciated.  ;D

I know you put completed but I was playing with this and  - I don't know what happened but this is the result - very tricky!!   ;D ;D  I wasn't even trying to colour - it just happened!
Hope you don't mind me posting!!   ::)    - it looks worse on here - don't feel confident to smooth the face without losing everything!

It's not nearly as good as what you've got - just different!   ;)

Hi this is my try and thanks Mowi for the higher res photo. My stance on this was not to mess with the face too much. its not clear whether she had a stern look, or softer features so i left it as it was and simply removed the damage. Hope you like it!
