Hello BanthamFirth,

This looks like Zacharia's baptism in 1775 - https://www.familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11686-143325-39?cc=1416598&wc=661026

Couple more baptisms here, to John and Mary, but it looks as though William died - his burial is on image no. 5.

You may well find some more!

Hello again,

I couldn't find a marriage at Sustead for John and Mary Abbs, but this one is a possible, in 1761.

It's at Gresham, which is about two miles from Sustead.  It's a shame they didn't list occupations.

What do you think?  https://www.familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11593-57162-95?cc=1416598&wc=657464

Thanks again!

The marriage looks like it could be them, pretty close and in the presence of a William Abbs, presumming they named their son after this william?

Thanks again for taking time out, i had not been on familysearch.org before so thanks for that too!

The Norfolk Parish Records on Family Search are marvellous - to be able to see the actual register entries is a real bonus.

However....  some registers are not in such good condition.

Like this one.  I think it shows your Mary Ann Abbs baptised in 1808, St Michael Coslany, and I can just make out the name Zachariah, but not the wife's name, or an actual date.

The "main" Family Search website has the baptism of Mary Ann, transcribed as "Mary Ann Abbs", baptised 1808, St Michael Coslany, father Zachariah, mother Mary Hall.

It's just so difficult to read on the original....

Mary Hall is it!! I had found something previously that linked Zachariah to Mary Hall,  but i put it to the back as it was a bit of a weak link, but hurray! Poor Mary i nearly didnt have her in our history.

Im guessing she died or they seperated before 1841 as she isnt in any census with Zachariah after this date.

I cant thank you enough for the information youve managed to find, i thought id hit a brick wall at Zachariah.  ;D

You're welcome.

Let's hope there's a "findable" marriage out there, or some other baptism that shows a maiden name.
I'll have another look tomorrow.

Hello again,

Found a few more things.

I looked on the "Historical Newspapers" site and found an obituary for Mary Abbs.
From the Bury and Norwich Post, dated September 24, 1823 - ".. aged 47, Mary Abbs, wife of Mr Z Abbs, shoemaker of St Michael's Coslany, sister to the above"
I'm afraid I can't post the image - I did that once before and a moderator removed it!

Well, the "above" is a Mr R Holl, shoemaker, of St Simon and Jude, aged 63

I hadn't been able to find a marriage between Zacharia Abbs and Mary Hall - but eventually found it, and she is indeed Mary Holl, not Hall, and they both signed their names...  Norwich St Lawrence, 1799 -
https://www.familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11549-33685-87?cc=1416598&wc=659382

If she was 47 in 1823, that gives an approximate birth date of 1776, and I think this is probably Mary Holl's baptism - same parish, June 1776 - https://www.familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11549-35212-22?cc=1416598&wc=659511

Shame they don't give mother's maiden name...

Glad to help.

I've been doing Norfolk research for quite a while now, and since these records came online last year, have found out more than I did in the ten years previously!!

As well as the Parish Registers, you can sometimes find "missing" things in the Archdeacons Transcripts or Bishops Transcripts, many of which are also online.

Going back to your Susted Abbs family, I've looked at another site that I use a lot, and I think (and hope) you'll be able to find out a bit more about them.  Seems there were Abbs in Susted going right back to the mid 1500's!!

If you type Abbs in the search box, and click on "All collections" at the bottom, a long list of results comes up - I've had a quick look at those in the Norfolk Record Office, and the Probate list.  I noticed Zachariah is an Executor in a few of the Probate records.  He was obviously an important and respected member of society.

Have a look - it takes some "going through", but as the Wills/Probate documents are actual images of the documents, it's worth the effort!

Best wishes,

My married name is Abbs. The Abbs side of my family is researching their name and have got as far as a William Abbs born 1650 we think in Aylemerton. Is there any connection with Zachariah please?

Hi,

Its very possible, The furthest i have got back so far is to John Abbs, Zachariah's father. He married Mary Wright in 1761 in Gresham, Norfolk.

John Abbs had (from what i have found) 4 children,  Zach, John, James and William.

If you look on http://www.noah.norfolk.gov.uk/ there are a few documents relating to Abbs in Aylemerton if i recall correctly.
