Title: Hannah WONNACOTT
Post by: jenph on Wednesday 14 September 11 16:37 BST (UK)
My grt grt grt grandmother was Hannah Wonnacott baptised in St. Marys church, Lifton, Devon July 1794, her parents were John and Judith Wonnacott.

She married Stephen Burridge in Lamerton on 24 March 1821.

I am trying to trace the marriage of her parents John and Judith Wonnacott.

Any help would be appreciated.

Jenny

Thank you for the information, the Hannah married to Purrage is not my direct relative but maybe related to me in some way I do not know.

However, Im not yet sure if I believe she was his spouse. I hope you see this and you are still registered and active here. Please respond or contact or message me. Im new to this forum so Im not really sure how active it is.

Hi - I am sorry I can't help any further. This forum is not so active with only the very occasional posting. I have been trying to research more details but as I live on the small island of Singapore I am limited to online research. Wonnacott.org website relies on contributions from extended family members with documentation or traceability before adding to the existing family tree. Sometimes we have some unverifiable data and the latest contribution is like the interlocking piece of the jigsaw

DevonFHS has an index of Lifton marriages 1650-1837, it is possible to order a printout of the index see DevonFHS website under Shop page. Lifton is a possible place of marriage if the child was baptised in that parish.

Here is my issue or where Im stuck. (I have documentation to show all of this)

Stephen Burridge or Burrage was from Devon was my ?x ggrandfather.
He married a HANNAH unknown. I have him in all census and even with her. I have him in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 census and Im sure I have the right person. I have his death cert and his burial info (although that only lists the town and doesn't say the cemetery which I'd like to know also but I have a guess on where).  There seems to be no documentation for the birth so that's an estimate also. However, there are many marriages listed for a Burridge born around the same time. All I know for certain is he was with a Hannah. I found one certificate saying he married a Hannah Wonacott in 1821. However, in records, I see no mention of any Wonacotts in the area that would fit the description. I see no birth info for a Hannah Wonacott. There seems to be no family there that she could have come from. I also see other people list his marriage as 1816 so I got that certificate as well. That lists a Burridge married to a Freeland woman with no first names. I see no record of a Hannah Freeland in the area either. There are many more Burridge marriages there also but I can't order every one. And they list no first names, only last. So I have no clue which marriage is his for certain and who Hannah really is.

Also, the reason for my reply is my Hannah Unknown lists her place of birth as Lifton so that was another clue. When I saw this post initially, the person stated her Wonacott was baptized in Lifton and married a Burridge or Purrage so I think we have the right two people. I was just hoping the person had more info to help put the puzzle together here for Stephen and Hannah.

Hannah Wonacott married Stephen Burridge 24 Mar 1821 at Lamerton.
You will find the name also as Wonacot, Wonnacott and Wonnaket (probably amongst others)
If say that Hannah was born about 1796. As she was married in Lamerton there is another marriage in Lamerton which may be appropriate.
William Wonnacott married Elizabeth Blatchford 23 Feb 1793 in Lamerton. There is a note on the 1793 marriage (perhaps details of martital status, maybe a widow, or home Parish, maybe Lamerton was the brides Parish) if you contact the OPC they may be able to give you this information.
I can only see two Wonnacot baptism in Lamerton;
Mary in May 1794 (buried Jun 1794) & Mary Ann in May 1795 d's of William and Elizabeth. W or E were not buried Lamerton. Perhaps William and Elizabeth moves to Lifton?

Incidentally there is only one other Wonnacott burial in Lamerton. Judith Wonnacott aged 76 (born 1762) buried 30 May 1838 in Lamerton. Note: Tavistock.
I assume this means Judith was living in Tavistock but buried in Lamerton.

Hope this helps
