Trying to find death of Charles Eckhart born abt 1827 Nassau Germany
Death was between 1871/81 probably Sheffield.
Have looked on FreeBMD but was unable to locate it.
I have come across several different spellings of the surname, Eckhardt, Egart. Earnhart but have had no luck locating him!
Any help appreciated.

Ladyhawk
All the info that people have found above is correct, looks like Carl Eckhart death certificate is way to go.
Thanks for help all.
If Carl is him, is it possible that he was actually born with this name and then changed it to Charles on coming to England to appear more 'English'?
-
My grandmother and her siblings (all born in Germany) Anglicised their names on coming to England in the 19th Century - Great Uncle Carl was known as Charles or Charlie. So it is probable that your relation did the same.

Burial from St Mary Bramall Lane.
ECKHARDT Carle aged 48, 20 Apr 1873 of Union Lane
Note: The address is the same as Charles in the 1871 census.

Thanks for that Tom
I didn't know such info was available.
It looks like the house was sold less than a year after her husband died.

Steve,
The information is available at your local library from home with your library ticket online-quite addictive and with a surname like Eckhardt, pretty easy to both search and recognise.
In the late 1870's to 1880's the name Charles Eckhardt and C. Eckhardt keep appearing as a competitor in professional handicap foot races, both in Sheffield at Hyde Park and New Hall, and also at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. In the 1890's an Eckardt is involved in the forming of a union of cutlers, and in a couple of entries a Mrs. Eckhardt and a Mrs Best appear as witnesses in an inquest.
So worth following it up at your local library be it here in UK or elsewhere.

I am also a relative of Charles (Karl) Eckhardt born 1824 in Nassau, Germany. Which line of the family are you from? Our family line is from his son John (Johannes) Eckhardt, Charles was my Great-great-great grandfather.
-
Hi Daisy
It's not actually my family, I'm doing the tree for a friend.
Charles (Karl) Eckhardt b1824 married Christiana KLEIN/KLYNE b1824 Nassau/Darmstadt.
She had a sister, Sophia b1834 who married Michael FISHER b1838.
My friend is descended down this line.

Hi Steve
I have traced the family back to Germany and have Sophia and Christiana's parents (Adam and Susannah) and paternal grandparents names. Have you traced any further back than that? I have not been able to trace their actual passage to the UK though.

No I'm not aware of this.
I know she was a midwife and did search her name on a website after seeing WDYTYA this week with Robin Gibb who had a midwife in his family.
Could you point me in the right direction?
It would be interesting to look, but not sure I will pursue it as she is 'only ' a 2nd great aunt to my friend.
-
She is in the "Born in Sheffield" book and I have seen her referenced in another local history book but can't remember the name of it.
The name is misspelled as "Christina" quite often. She is referenced as one of the first trained midwives in Sheffield and her pension amount is quoted in the books.
I have been trying to get some pictures of her as I know she was involved in the opening of the Jessop Hospital but I think I need to go to the Sheffield Archives for that. We do have a picture of someone we believe may be Christiana Eckhardt but wanted to clarify this.
-
Hi Daisy
Christiana is my Great Great Grandmother! on her daughter Catherine's side. If you could point me to any information regarding Christiana id be grateful.
Her Son Jacob was in Brixton Prison (1881 census)
