Post by: Wallie Lizzie on Friday 06 May 05 01:31 BST (UK)
Hi, Could some nice kind person please look up the following Quinn family in the 1851 census for me :)

I am trying to find the following Quinn's in 1851

Felix Quinn b 1821 Ireland
Ellen or Ellin Quinn b 1831 Ireland
Catherine Quinn b 1846 Ireland
Michael Quinn b 1849 Scotland
Mary or Moriah Quinn b 1855 Newcastle upon Tyne
John Quinn b 1859 Newcastle upon Tyne

I have found them on the 1861 census living in a place called Wall Knoll? Northumberland
Felix and Ellin are ship yard labourer's
and the children were Faggot sellers

I believe they came over from Ireland during the potatoe famine 1845 1846??

Any help would be very much appreciated, would love to know where they came from in Ireland too if any one can help

Thanks very much!

Regards Wallie

Hello Wallie .....There was a place called Wall Knoll Presbyterrean Church Newcastle upon Tyne .....If you could find what part of Newcastle the presbyterrean Church was in  ...Then you are likely to find where abouts they were if they were labourers in the Ship Yard I reckon that that would be Vickers Armstrong Ship Yard and certainly there are many knoll's in that area as the land rises up from the river level to the present day west road out of newcastle.....it may be on an old map of Newcastle it could have been swallowed up by the many industrilised housing estates and just be remembered in the name of the Prebyterrean Church thats where I saw it will try different searches if I find any thing else will let you know Felix Quinn is very much a family name in my family we are catholic got one in every generation....Felix brother to my Great Grandfather Patrick  1846 settled in Jarrow.....Felix about 1869 my grandfather's brother settled in Sunderland.....My Uncle Felix Quinn was born Felling near Gateshead  about 1894 lived in North Shields and worked at Walkergate Naval Yard on the way to Newcastle........I suppose all these Felix's could be getting named after a Felix that went to the colonies....mine are all descendents of Patrick Quinn born 1801 and Agnes Dalton born 1808 in Armagh....we assume there children were born or registerred in Creenagh Kilmore Armagh.....Ag labs...Thomas Patrick Margaret Mary Ann and Felix all settled on Tyneside...bothsides of the river...name started as Quin and in my grandfathers generation suddenly became Quinn.....they were catholic and to get work in Ireland especially Ulster it was better to be one N and also it wasnt unknown that they walked long distances to the RC church but payed lip service to the Church of Ireland obviousley the next generation born in England felt safe to add the extra N...Hope this may help you in some way I will look at some old maps I have off old newcastle...and books....and let you know about Wall Knoll.......quindalton

Hi Quindalton,

Sorry it has taken so long to reply. but I do appreciate your help on the Quinn's. :) :)

Here is the information I have on my Quinn's dating back to the 1861 census's. I suspect that they came over from Ireland after the birth of their daughter Catherine (1846) as the next children were born here.

1861 census RG9/3829 folio 68 page 19

living in Wall Knoll civil parish of All Saints town of Newcastle upon Tyne Northumberland - Municipal parish east.

I have

Felix Quin b 1821 Ireland
Ellin Quin b 1831 Ireland
Catherine Quin b 1846 Ireland
Michael Quin b 1849 Scotland (Sunderland)
Mary Quin b 1855 Newcastle Upon Tyne
John Quin b 1859 Newcastle Upon Tyne

1871 Census RG10/5061 folio 68 page 17

Blue Quarries Gateshead - St John's parish - Sheriff Hill - Durham- Gateshead

I have

Felix Quinn b 1821 Ireland
Ellen Quinn b 1831 Ireland
Michael Quinn b 1851 Scotland
Moriah or Mary Quinn b 1856 Newcastle Upon Tyne
John Quinn b 1862 Newcastle Upon Tyne

1880 US Census

District 1, Princeton Mercer, New Jersey

Felix Quinn b 1820 Ireland - stone mason
Ellen Quinn b 1830 Ireland - house keeper

Their son Michael was my gt Grandfather and I have him and his family on the 1881, 1891, 1901 census's living in Pendleton Salford with his wife and family.

Family legend has it that Felix and Ellen went to the USA and Felix lived to 102 years old. My gt Aunt went out to live with them, Catherine Quinn born Pendleton about 1879 my Mum used to write to Catherine during the war about 1942 after which we have lost touch with the family in the USA

I have just sent for Michael's birth certifcate, so that should shed some light on his mother's maiden name and help with tracing who my Quinn's belonged to!

The information on Newcastle etc is great and I thank you very much, If you have come accross any of the other Quinn's mentioned above I could be grateful for the information on any of them.

I am not sure if I have been in contact with you previously through another website, but anyway any help or idea's you have are greatly appreciated.

Look forward to hearing from you, or anyone else who may have information on any of the above Quinn's.

regards Wallie

Just to let anyone else know who is looking for the Quinn Family:-

Felix and Ellen Quinn were not my Michael Quinn's parents, his parents were Michael and Catharine both born in Ireland. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.

So I am actually looking for a Michael Quinn who lived to be 102 in the USA and not a Felix Quinn.

Thanks once again to those who were able to help.
