There is a marriage listed for John Lewis in the third quarter of 1893. The volume and page number is 8b 961. There are two female names on the page; Rachel Hindley and Margaret Ann Young. Does anyone know which lady John Lewis married, please? Thank you.

Hi,
According to www.lancashirebmd.org.uk it was Rachel Hindley.

Thank you so much for that, Mo. Why didn't I think to look there? Doh!! Now I just need to get a copy of my Nana's birth certificate and see if her mother's maiden name was Hindley :)

If your Nana was born after 1912 then the birth reg will give mother's maiden name

As Suzard inidicates the GRO indices added mother's maiden names were added from Sept 1911. However some of the local BMD indices have them earlier (depends on the local registrar) and there are some on LancashireBMD so it is worth checking on there for your Nan.

Yes, I already knew that but thanks anyway :)
My Nana (May Lewis) was born May 1892. Her birth is on Ancestry but not on LancsBMD. I wish I was rich.....the cost of ordering certificates soon mounts up :o
Do you know which Registry Office I should apply to, to get a copy of her birth certificate? It's just down as West Derby. Thanks :)
-
Sorry, the answer is that "it depends"! There's a page on UKMD that lists the sub-districts over time on the link below - it also says the registers have been split over three current districts :(

If she was b 1892 and the marriage was 1893 -what name is she registered in??
Suz
-
Thank you mshrmh. I'll look into that.
Suz, her birth was registered in the name of Lewis but there's a clear possibility that she was born out of wedlock. It appears she may have lied when she got married because her age on it makes her birth 1894. This also ties in with the fact that my mother always said that my Nana was 88 when she died but it looks like she was actually 90!! I'm so desperate to get more information on this part of my tree, as all the rest of it is pretty full.
Thank you so much for your help everyone :)

If she was born out of wedlock she would have been registered in mother's name??

Suz, thank you so much for trying to help me. I really appreciate it :) I'm going to put all I know in one post for you :)
May was born on 7th May 1892. She married Lewis Waring Robbins on 08 Nov 1924 in Blackpool, Lancashire. She died in the first quarter of 1983 in Kirkham, Lancashire, making her 90 years old.
I believe she had a brother called Sydney, who was born c1897 and died 26 October 1917 in Flanders, France. I have his Dead Man's Penny from the war and the details of his death are on the CWGC website. Now, here's a thing.....
On the CWGC website, it says that Sydney is the son of Mrs Rachael Lewis of 6 Fleet Street, Blackpool. However, because I couldn't find a marriage that 'fit' that spelling of Rachael I was thinking maybe it was a spelling mistake. The Rachael you found is a possibility but there's no mention of May or Sydney. Also, I can't find anything that 'fits' in the 1911 census. It's so frustrating. I feel like I'm so close but so far away!!
Does any of this help at all? I know sometimes different people see different things. There's probably something glaringly obvious that I've missed!!

Do you have May's marriage cert???
If so what was father's name and occupation? Who were witnesses? and was May a spinster??
Suz
-
Yes, I do have it :) May's father's name was John Lewis. His occupation was Journeyman Tailor. May was a spinster. I don't have the certificate to hand at the moment and, for some strange reason, haven't added the witnesses to my Family Tree Maker details ::) I can't recall who they were, either. I don't think they were relatives......well, not obvious ones, anyway.
If it helps, Lewis Waring Robbins' father's name was Frank Robbins from Cirencester, Gloucestershire. He was married to Beatrice Katherine Waring.
