WOW! Thank you for the quick reply! I hoped it might be this family, but I lost William in the 1901 census which only seemed to have a William Gauden of the right age, being the son of a Benjamin Gauden. I'm going to continue with the assumption we've got the right family headed by Daniel Gauden and Elizabeth - can anyone help take the family back further? I've found a Daniel Gordon marrying possibly an Elizabeth Pargeter in 1866 - I wondered if they might be of interest or just red-herrings?!

Think I've found possible parents for Daniel Gauden b c 1841; William Gauden b c1821 and Ann b c 1841 on 1841 census, at Engine Lane Old Swinford, Stourbridge. Does anyone have info that would help clarify or move this forward? Many thanks.

Thanks Claire! The search system I've been using doesn't bring up this family - they don't seem to exist on there - are there more comprehensive and reliable sites you or anyone would recommend I can use in the future?

Hi,

'familysearch.org' is probably one of the largest free sites on the web that I use but some records (submitted) do need checking out, whereas 'extracted' records are usually more reliable

There are lots of subscription based sites which are all very good, I prefer Ancestry and the census records which I've written are from there.

And finally all the good people on here that help each other out- you really can't beat that!!

Just wondering if there is anywhere I can get/see/learn about historical info relating to the Lye in the 18th/19th/early 20th centuries? Need easily accessible resources - can't do wheeling around churchyards!

Thank you! That has confirmed on of my ? marks. There's some sort of family story about at least one child being killed in a house fire but don't know when. Also passing mention of a Beatrice (who I can't find born as a Gauden anywhere) but think I found a Beatrice (born Stafford c1904) who may have died c1908 but maybe that's all just coincidental. The 1911 census says there were 2 children died by then, leaving 2 others Daniel and Elizabeth - know now that certainly Benjamin would be one of those who had died and he wasn't mentioned to me by what brief family history I started with. Poor child.

Hi Gaudengirl.  I think my GG Grandfather, Daniel Gauden, was Williams brother.  If you are interested in knowing what I have found during my research please email me personally at (*).
I live in Canada now.  My father is descended from Daniel Gauden/James Kendrick and lived in Highley, Shropshire.
Look forward to hearing from you maybe.
