Title: Unfortunate names found in family trees?
Post by: Ruth1973 on Monday 12 September 11 13:46 BST (UK)
Hiya, this is just me wanting to share my horrified but slightly bemusing find of my great great great grandmother's name and not being able to google it to see if there is anything without finding contents of an adult nature!
She was Fanny Suckling living at 2 Richmond Terrace, Salford, Lancashire in 1888.

It makes you think about what names they might have sniggered at in the 1800's as against what we snigger at now!

What unfortunate and interesting names do you have in your trees?

I have a woman in my tree was originally Fanny Swain.  Then she married Albert Pocock.

Hmm - I think I would have thought twice about marrying him if I were her.

Some years ago I was listening to a Registrar on the wireless who claimed to collect the unusual names he was presented with registering. One I recall was that he tried to persuade a Mr & Mrs Enis from calling their son Peter. Apart from that there was a Mr & Mrs Pipe who insisted in calling their son Dwaine and, whist relating this at the office, one of the girls claimed to have been at school with a girl called Annette Curtain - so much for your aunt Fanny!

Have you seen this book.....Potty,Fartwell and Knobs by Russell Ash.Published in 2007 it is an hilarious collection of extraordinary but true names of British people .Thereare nearly 300pages of them arranged under various headings.Itsdifficult to pick out just a few but here goes
Not WantedJames colville bLondon1861
Loo Loo b 1877 d 1904
Low Fat m Cardiff 1905
Margarine Fryer female b 1831
Margaret Coffee Maxwell b 1893

Some are very unfortunate in their pronunciation and some are very rude and I will not put them down here.

If not, I'm sure it wasn't for the want of trying!  ;D

My aunt courted a Mr Crapp, but he refused to change his name if they married, so she married a plain Mr Smith instead.

Somebody searching my tree [who found they had no connection] had in their tree a Bugg marrying a Flye, [still makes me chuckle]

I have a Queenie Elizabeth who married a man named Goldwin, but everyone apparently called him Goldie. So Queenie and Goldie is how they were known.  ::)

BTW, Queenie had a brother named King.

What were their parents thinking?  ??? ::) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
