Hi there - I'm researching my husband's family tree. His grandfather was Richard Smith from Knottingley.
Richard's father was Richard Burton b around 1857 in Knottingley and his mother was Ann Eliza Smith born in Bridlington (1881 census).
They had three children before they married:
Richard Smith 1879
William Henry Burton Smith 1878
Ann Smith 1880
They then married on 24 Feb 1884 and had two more children:
Ruth Burton 1886
Richard Burton 1887 - 1888.
Richard Burton's father was William Burton (Richard's marriage details show this) of Knottingley, born around 1818 and his mother may have been Mary Lupton, but I'm not sure. If this is the case, then William's father may have been Thomas Burton.
Richard Burton had a brother called Henry (born 1851) and a sister called Harriet (born 1847). I think that Richard died in 1888.
Ann Eliza Smith's father was called Robert (from Ann Eliza and Richard's marriage details).
I would be most grateful of any help in tracing the family tree back beyond Richard Burton and Ann Eliza Smith.
Thanks in anticipation! :)

Hi,
Apologies, had posted some information but realised I may have followed the wrong person, hence posting removed to avoid confusion - will need to check it out further.

Hello Joy, Richard Burton was my great grandfather and Ann Smith my great grandmother, Their child Mary Ann Burton (also known as Smith) was my grandmother, she married William Link and their eldest child, William was my Dad. Although I have the Link Family tree done, I haven't much on the Burton side, but would love to have their history as well. My Dad always said the Smiths were from Ireland but I haven't anything about that. If you find out anything about the Burtons I would love to know and if I find out anything (I'm always searching) I will pass it on to you. Hoping to get a reply, regards, Brenda Beattie.

Hi Brenda
Great to hear from you! Certainly seems that my husband, Keith, and you share great grandparents, which makes you second cousins.
I will give you access to our tree on Ancestry, which will let you see what we have. It's been very hard to get further back on Ann Eliza Smith's side of the family. She was definitely born in Bridlington and I have a copy of her birth certificate - father Robert Smith and mother Ann Wood. There was some suggestion from research that she might have been from a fairground or travelling family but I can't find anything so far to substantiate that. However, Irish roots would fit in with that.
Richard Burton's father was William and grandfather was Thomas, both from Norton, Yorkshire. We think Thomas's father was John Burton.
Do you still live in the Knottingley area? Quite a few of Keith's Smith/Burton relatives still live there. We live in Northern Ireland, where I'm from, but make regular trips across to Yorkshire and to Lancashire, where Keith's Mum was from.
Look forward to hearing from you!
Kind regards, Joy

Hello Joy, I have a family tree of the Link family on the Knottingley family tree web site, that's where I started doing the Tree, but my Dad and I sat down a long time ago and he remembered quite a lot of stuff and I had it packed away for years. I didn't know a lot of the family but you learn a lot doing family trees. I also have one on Ancestry which you can look at. About the Fairground relative, there was an Aunt who travelled with the Fair, she could have been married to someone from a fairground family, my Dad would take me down to the Fairground everytime they were in town, she ran the cocoanut shye. I can't remember her name. Ann Eliza, after Richard died married Thomas Illingworth and I remember aunt Maggie, one of their children, I liked her. She used to come to my Dad's Pub and her 3 kids and I would play in the back garden on the beer barrels. I left Knottingley in 1953 , married a Canadian, so I live in Canada, don't get to visit like I used to, getting old but I have a lot of cousins on my mothers side still all around there and a cousin on the Link side lives in Pontefract who has also done the Link Tree. I spend a lot of time looking up people from all sides, sometimes I'm lucky, sometimes not. If I find anything at all to do with our families I will let you know for sure. For now I will close, best regards, Brenda

Hi Brenda
Thanks for coming back to me so quickly. Yes, I have seen your tree on Ancestry and sent you an email about it. I wondered where you found out about Ann Eliza's Dad Robert Smith's parents and grandparents? I didn't have anything about them.
You say about an Aunt who travelled with the fair - do you mean an aunt of Ann Eliza's? That's interesting about the coconut shy!
Yes, I knew about Thomas Illingworth marrying Ann Eliza after Richard died. I have the family on the tree.
I have lots of relatives in Canada due to my Grandmother's two sisters who emnigrated in the early 1900s. They are spread all over now - Quebec, Montreal, Winnipeg (the original place to which they migrated) and Victoria. A couple of them visited us last summer and we hope to return the visit maybe in 2014.
If I find anything else out, I'll let you know. Again, thanks for getting in touch. Keith says hello!
Kind regards
Joy
