I am trying to trace a marriage of michael leonard born 1876 from reengaroga ireland to a annie nolan born 1891 sydney australia. I believe they got married in the reengaroga area in ireland. Their son was my grandad and they had 7 other children born in Tralee ireland. Some of the children went to America and some of the others settled in England while a couple I believe stayed in ireland. He is my great grandfather. Any help would be great. Thanks
-
Do you know the names, place and dates of birth for any of the children ?
It might help start the search off..
p.s. I dont see anywhere named Reengaroga in Co. Cork - presume it's a mistranscription or mis-hearing. You can check Irish placenames on the townland database at : www.thecore.com/seanruad

I believe it is somewhere near Skibbereen. Their children were as follows Michael who I have been told died but don't know where Patrick who moved to Maidenhead UK, Joseph, Peter, Mary who I believe moved to Washington DC, Nancy who moved to Slough UK and I believe her husband Matthew Sheehea was Mayor there. I don't have their date of births. Catherine (Kitty) born in 1919 died 1985 who moved to Reading UK, and Eugene my grandad born 1922 died 1982 and settled in Middlesbrough UK.
-
what year do you think the eldest child might have been born ?
knowing that would help narrow down the possible dates for a marriage. There are quite a few Leonard families in Co. Cork... so not easy to search for a marriage over such a wide date range..
Might be worth checking for Michael snr on the Irish 1911 census to see if he's already married at that time
p.s. be careful about posting details on people who may be alive - as that's not allowed on RootsChat.

Reenogreena is in the civil parish of Kilfaughnabeg in Skibbereen. Anybody born there after civil reg started would probably be registered at the Union Hall office or maybe the Rosscarbery office in Clonakilty.

Based on the townland database Reenogreena would be in the Civil Registration District of Skibbereen. Here's the Michael Leonard marriages shown on the BMD Index between 1911 and 1919 - no sign of any in Skibbereen district, and the only one in Co. Cork is in the Mallow district, with no Nolan cross-match as far as I can see.

Thankyou I have now found Michael Leonard in the Irish 1901 census not married at house No 2 Gortnalickey (Cape Clear) Cork and his dad was a farmer. Which rings true as we were always told that they were farmers, but still can't find his wedding certificate but I know he wasnt married in 1901 and Kitty was born in 1919 so he must of got married between 1901 and 1919. Which has narrowed it down a bit. Could someone please tell me if Gortnalickey is anywhere near Skibbereen as I know my grandad lived there before he came to England.
Thankyou once again for your help. x

...
wouldn't 1901 be a bit early for the marriage if Ann was born in 1891 ?
Have you found Michael on the 1911 census ?

sorry looking at wrong person she wasn't married in July 1916 as I have seen a picture of her with Michael Leonard.

Hopefully you've worked this part out but just in case........
Reengarorga is 'Reengarorga Island' or even spelt 'Ringarorga Island'.
The spelling does vary.
It is just near Rath (Rathmore), Tullagh
So its off the Skib to Baltimore Road but just outside of Baltimore.
There's a nice stone bridge joining it to the mainland.
There are various parts to the Island including Donegal, Inane, Gortnalicky, Gortaliscaw and Gortadrohid. These are used in the 1901/1911 Census as 'Townland' and the DED (electoral division) as Cape Clear.
Some residents had their birth place recorded as 'Baltimore' rather then Rath or Reengarorga.
Various Leonard families were found on the Island and around Rath (and still are).
The catholic church at Rath is St Mary's and the local pub is the 'Sibin' which I believe Michael Collins used to frequent.
The area had many fisheries and I believe a larger population in the late 1880's to 1930's.
My family immediate and ancestral families are from the area and I've obtained documents via the Skibereen Heritage Centre.
Hope this is of interest.

Thankyou for the information I have found out my Great grandad Michael Leonard his dad was from the area a Owen Eugene Leonard and Catherine Driscoll. Owen I believe was born about 1831. My grandad was also called Eugene but he left their and went to England to fight in WW2. I am not sure if Michael Leonard took over his fathers farm.

Hi, I hope this is right but think that Reengaroga is part of the parish of Rath & the Islands. Just in case you don't know, these parish records are available at www.irishgenealogy.ie. Always been fascinated by the name Reengaroga - it has great poetry in it!
-
Thankyou yes I did know my great great grandad was from there, I also found a facebook page about this area and have been speaking to some people who say they are going to ask the older generation if they can remember my family. Thankyou.
-
Feesca1, I think I may be related to your Michael Leonard. I would like to learn what you know about him and other Leonards on Reengaroga. I am new to RootsChat. While I wait for a reply from you I will try to learn about how to best and safely share information with each other that includes current living people. Thank you.

Thanks Kiltaglassan and feesca1, I got your PM Fiona but I learned I can't PM you back until I have done 3 postings. So, this is #2. My grandfather Owen Matthew Leonard was born in Boston in 1874. His father John Leonard was also from Reengaroga. To be continued...

Posting #3:
My Great Grandfather John Leonard born about 1844 in Reengaroga. I am pretty sure my grandfather Owen had a cousin Eugene who still lived on or near Reengaroga. I would like to PM with you about all this. It seems like we must be cousins. I hope this 3rd posting enables us to Private Message. Thanks.

The official name is Ringarogy Island. Here's the townland of Donegall West on it, with Donegall Middle and Donegall East further to the east.

Might this be Leonard relations in the 1901 census in Donegall Middle (Cape Clear)?

Thanks,Kitaglassen. Yes! The Leonards you found for 1901 with Owen as the head of household is on the right track. I think that Owen is a cousin. I haven't sorted out which generation yet. There are a lot of Owens in the family! I'll be following up on the other leads you posted (Anna and Bridget) as time permits. Thanks so much. The search continues!

Hi,
When I was very small my Mum used to talk about Leonard’s as cousins. We lived in Hertfordshire in the UK.
My Mum was Bridget Bohane 1918-1998
Her father was Peter Bohane 1864-1944
Her mother was Ellen Bohane ( nee Hegarty) 1877-1955
They were all born in South west Cork and the family farm going back to around 1800 was in Killaderry about three miles south of Skibbereen in the parish of Castlehaven. Their land was owned by the Townsend Family of Castletownsend until about 1888 when they bought it back.
The town lands mentioned in other posts are very close to Killaderry.
I’m at a loss as to how the Leonard’s might be linked to us as I have twenty years of research with lots of help from The Skibb Heritage Centre🌟
I do have a great Aunt Catherine Bohane born about 1866/67 whom I have not been able to find and assumed she may have died as a child. Can any one make any links to this.
Sorry it rambles on !

Thank you for looking, that’s Mum and the map is Killaderry.
Apart from Covid years ,I go “home “every year. I have many files linking Bohanes of Killaderry and Herartys of Laharadane ( the next door townland).
What I can’t work out is why my Mum would have referred to Leanords as cousins.
I can track all my Uncles and Aunts, know all my first cousins in Ireland.
I know where my grandfather Peters brothers and sisters went ,who they married and their children. The only one I haven’t tracked is my great Aunt Catherine. Her father would have been Michael Bohane of Killaderry. I can’t find a marriage so thought she may have died. All the Bohanes who went to the USA kept together over two generations, well three if we count my American cousin’s children !
After years of searching I found where my grandmother’s sisters went which was Anaconda Deer Park in Montana. I have their naturalisation, marriage and deaths and it can’t be them. Wrong names at marriage and my Mum always said they didn’t know what had happened to them. They were born pre 1877. So the link to the Leanords remains a mystery !
-
I wonder if I may be able to work out the link between your family and the Leonard’s.
My grandmother was Anne Leonard and my grandfather Matthew Sheehy, who moved from Ireland to Slough. I don’t recognize your family name but my older relatives may.
