Does anyone have photographs or personal records or connections etc
with the Alfred Herbert factories [especially canal road] in Coventry.??.
-
Cannot help you with your requests although I can remember I went on a works visit there in the early 1960s as an apprentice, we could not believe that the floor in one part was composed of railway sleepers!!
There was/is a book about the company which I purchased a few years ago from the Coventry Archives for the princely sum of one pound, it is a very good history of the company with twenty photographs. Published by the City Council as part of a Coventry Environmental Education Project I would not be surprised if they still have copies today for sale, well worth an Email if you have not got a copy.

Thanks for your reply Al.
The Edgwick works had the biggest machine shop in europe and I was staggered to see the whole works had disappeared when I looked a few weeks ago.
Tried to find the books you mentioned but no luck..however I'II keep trying.
Many thanks. ;)

Have you emailed Coventry Archives?
If all else fails I will send you my copy as it is more use to you than to me, I bought it on a visit to the Archives as I worked in engineering for Clarksons in Nuneaton who actually bought some parts of Herberts, the founder of Clarksons worked for Herberts as a young man.
My impression of Herberts was that it dwelt too much in the past and never kept up to date with developments in the modern world but of course I was no expert in such matters.
Send me a P.M. if you fail to get a copy.

Or try Coventry Family History Society. They may have something.

My father did his apprenticeship with Alfred Herbert's Edgwyck, his Grandmother sent a copy of the 1946 'Alfred Herbert News' to him in Melbourne.
Lots of news of the times as well as photos of employees and plans of the factory in it.
It's quite a treasure, if your interested PM me your email and I will send you some scans.

Hello. I have just come across your post when trying to see if anyone would be interested in some Alfred Herbert news! What a coincidence ...
My father worked at the Edwick branch of Alfred Herbert's from 1936 - to when he was made redundant when the works closed.
I have numerous photos and a lot of Alfred Herbert News.
My father was Chairman of the Social Club for many years.
I hope this may be of interest to you.

Hey , my father Wendell ( Harry ) Tatam is 99 years old, got all his marbles and is still going strong. He worked for AH machine tools and multi spindle m/c's. from about 1933 as an apprentice . Went to India for AH and set up the AH multis making bullets, then till they sent him to Australia when they opened Sydney branch approx 1949. He has so many bound AH books, company club issues, and social club magazines all in order from the early 20's till the '60-70's. Anyone want to let me know if anyone wants to share these irreplaceable magazines / books.
Old Herbert names from his era :
Ray Davis, John Barwell , bloke named someone Blunt, Jack Coleman, . I can get other names off him anytime. Anyone here got any comments ? would love to hear .

Dad's boss in the UK was Frank Bates.

I think it would be most appropriate if Harry could be encouraged to donate his Alfred Herbert archive to the Coventry Archives at the Herbert Museum. I'm sure that they and future generations would appreciate their value. Another alternative archive is the Modern Records Centre at Warwick University.
-
Thanks for that. I'll contact them. Hope any other posters on this site say hello if they have any AH links .
-
Are you still interested in Alfred Herbert memorabilia?
