Title: Unknown COVENTRY relative
Post by: ConJPower on Monday 05 September 11 18:11 BST (UK)
Fellow researchers ...

I've got kind of a detailed query (without any actual details) so please bear with me ...

Just looking for some advice on how to proceed ...  ???

I recently was sent a picture from a relative, of a woman in her mid 40s (ish), Victorian dress, no name, just the description that follows ... I am guessing the picture was taken in the 1890s.

"Niece of P.Furlong of Duncannon, all killed in Coventry Blitz".

No name, no address, no anything.  I am wondering where to go to start trying to identify this woman - the P.Furlong mentioned was my gr. grandfather and Duncannon is my home town in Ireland.

I've tried a few places regarding casualties of the Blitz during WWII and nobody of the name "Furlong" is mentioned.  She would have had to have been (A) a descendant of my gr.grandfathers brother (whom I cannot trace)  (B) or of his sister (whom I also also cannot trace) or (C) given the dress, his sister herself.

All help and / or pointers appreciated.

Can you give us the names and dates of relatives you have someone may be able to trace using those long shot but worth a try

thanks for the reply.

the trouble is I don't know which branch of the family this person was from, so therefore don't have definite names etc.

I was really just looking for some pointers as to where to possibly research coventry relatives, or BMDs etc.

There was a mass grave for all those killed in the blitz in Coventry, its in the London Road Cemetery.
I can't remember if all the names are listed anywhere.
Worth contacting the Coventry archives at the Herbert Art Gallery in Coventry.
http://www.theherbert.org/index.php/home/history-centre
Or the Coventry Family History society
www.covfhs.org

hope you get somewhere!

I think you have identified the way to proceed already.

You will need to trace the brother and sister of P Furlong and see what daughters (or maybe daughtersin law) they had - and one of them might be her.
If you are thinking the generations look wrong from her age - then do you know if P Furlong (your grandfather) 's father was also a P Furlong? If so she might be his neice, and therefore same generation as your g'father.
Also consider that may she may a be a neice of your grandfathers wife as another possibility. (I know my husband refers to my brothers children as his neices and nephews!)

If she is a daughter of the sister, then surname is unlikely to be Furlong. Thats why it is needed to research the sister and see who she married and what children they had.

That's why I asked for any names the OP has to try and make the Ireland/Coventry connection

thanks again everyone - i appreciate its not much to start with.

my gr. grandfather was Pat Furlong and his wife Ellen Breen. These were born in 1839 and 1845 respectively, in Ireland.

gr.grandfathers brother Richard, b. 1838 in Ireland - nothing more on him.  Don't know if he emigrated.  Nothing on FamilySearch.

gr. grandfathers sister Johanna b. 1844, Wexford, Ireland - nothing more on her.  Don't know if she emigrated.  Nothing on FamilySearch.
