Title: William Martindale born Cumberland, UK
Post by: geniewhoami on Monday 05 September 11 12:06 BST (UK)
My Gt x4 grandfather was William Martindale, as evidenced on the Stanhope Church marriage register of his son Wm. my 3x GG (18/4/1840) where he is shown as a schoolteacher. I have had a 'brick wall' regarding Wm Snr but think I have had a breakthrough. His 1st wife Ann Currey (marr. 15/6/1815 at Stanhope) was buried the same day as son Wm was baptised (20/3/1816). The Currey family lived at Broadale House, Rookhope and I am making an assumption that Wm Jnr was brought up by that family because I cannot connect to the 'Weardale' Martindales and the only other possible Wm Martindale, schoolteacher  that I can find is on the 1841 census at North Shields married to a Margaret (marr @ Tynemouth 12/9/1824 & described as  a Widower), on the 1851 census his county of birth is Cumberland and his age 66 whereas on the previous census his age had been 50 so I cannot be sure of the y.o.b but prob about 1785.
There are several Wm Martindale on family Record but the best date appears to be 30/6/1784 to Joseph and Fanny nee Whitfield. I cannot find a record of this in the Bishop Trancripts. Can anyone advise where to look now for info re birth as I don't know the whereabouts of the villages, I know of Alston bordering Co Durham but the 'Alston garrigill' Bishop transcript has nothing I can see, and also are there school records re 'schoolteacher' because it is v likely that a parent would also be a teacher??? hope someone can help, thankyou. gem

Unfortunately, Martindale seems to be a fairly common name in Cumberland, especially around Wigton and Gilcruz but they are a long way from Alston. If you visit cumberlandroots, you can visit the bishop transcripts  and run through the various possibilities. Good Luck. bob

Hi Gem

I'm a bit confused.

Where have you been looking through BT's?  Is this online or on familysearch?

There are quite a number of Nonconformist churches in Alston and there are also Nenthead and places but they may not be online.

Of course they may have dropped over the border into Allendale or some such place, but that's another story!

I'll see what I can see.

Best wishes

Emms :)

PS Hi Bob  :)

I'm glad to see you've not completely deserted us for the French boards!!

PPS Gem, where did you get the entry for the marriage from if you haven't found it in the BT's?  I'm trying to think up what I could look up, but maybe you've been in the record offices?

Thank you for your replies. I have the marriage info from the Record office and the Bishop transcripts for Stanhope parish church. Gem
