I have tracked my family back to an entry in the 1841 census for Esat Grinstead in Meadowlands. James Chea laged 40-45 is married to Mary aged 35-40 and has 7 children, Elizabeth, Henry, William, Mary, Ann, Harriet and John , who is my ggg grandfather.
I would appreciate any help in either finding the birthplace of James and his date of birth, and any other relevant information.
As a new member to this site I hope this is sufficient detail.
Thanks in anticipation

1851 census at Lowfield Heath in parish of Ifield, in Horsham, James is shown as being born in West Hoathly, Sussex, England around the year 1800.
West Hoathly baptisms are available on the internet I think, will have a look later if no-one else gets there first.

Thanks for all the help.
Still only using internet free resources I've found James Cheal as born in West Hoathley on July 28th 1899 and with probably his father as Henry Cheal who married Elizabeth Hudson with banns on Nov 26th 1791 in West Hoathley. Henry Cheal is more of a problem as I cannot find his birth, although I have found a Henry who died in 1819 aged 48, which would place him as born in 1760/61.
Still looking

Further to my last post if Henry who was born in 1761 in West Hoathley is the same as John who was also born in West Hoathley in 1761, then the next stey back seems to be another Henry Cheal who married Ann Voive in 1759 May 21st for banns.
This is quite addictive

Hi,
I would agree that Betty is probably Elizabeth Hudson and that the marriage you have found is the correct one, though the SMI gives the year as 1792.
I cannot see a Henry baptised in West Hoathly at all during a reasonable time frame so I'll have a look at some other parishes for you.

There is, as you say another Henry CHEAL, who marries Ann VOICE on 21 May 1759 in West Hoathly. It's a possibility, and maybe Henry jnr was not baptised for some reason?
An added problem though is that Henry snr was a widower when he married Ann Voice and so it would not be clear who the mother of your Henry is: Ann, or his former wife, Elizabeth FARMER of Brenchly in Kent - they married on 13 Oct 1751 in Pembury, Kent.
Admitedly though, it is more likely that he is the son of Henry and Ann.
