In the MLFHS Catholic Register Index

I found the following baptisms, I would like a few details:

 1878
Alfridus Bennes (name is actually Bennett)
 Father William Bennes (Bennett)
 Mother Mary Caffrey
I would like to know date(s), and the name of Godparents. And if it is there, address.

This is the most important one, I've got no idea where he was born. No birth record in Hulme. He died in 1879, so not in any census record either. Possibly somewhere on the way back from India.

Less important but if it's no trouble:
 1881
Emily Ann Bennett, same parents, godparents John and Elizabeth Begley.
Just date(s), I know where they lived.

 1901
Margaret Norah Begley, parents John Begley and Elizabeth Bennett, godfather John Begley
Just date(s), I know where they lived.

 1902
Alicia Begley, same parents, godfather Frederick Begley
Date(s) and the name of the godmother.

 Thank you
 Loes

				Oh, beautiful, thank you!

The father William Bennett had been a soldier in the 108th Regt of Foot. Final discharge 22 Feb 1876 in India. First sign again of the family was in the 1881 Census. Emily Ann was a month old.
Btw, I did find the year of her baptism as 1881, which makes sense. Address the same as in census.

There was just an Alfred Ernest birth registered in Chorlton, jun qtr 1877, but surely they wouldn't have waited that long having him baptized if he was born there. He must have been born somewhere on the way back from India to the Manchester area, at sea or somewhere else in England.

No godparents there, would that have been normal in 1878? Or does your source just not mention them?

Try the manchester and salford history forum (google for it). I'm sure someone can help with at least the first two, the other two are probably too late for the CD. Those will be on microfilm in the City Library in Manchester (also in Preston). If someone happens to go there, you may be in luck.

Hi Loes lamb, Luzzu & Silkies,

A big thank you for your kindness in taking the time to reply and Lussu you  are a star for getting all that information so quickly, I really canīt believe it. Iīm new to all this so please bear with, actually it has taken me ages just to find out how to reply!!!!
Now another question if you donīt mind,  if you have experience in RC baptisms, was it normal not to have a godfather? as I have seen this on another family baptism. Mary Elizabeth is the grandmother of these children and yet she is their godmother too, have you seen these elsewhere?

Silkies, thank you for that website, I just had a quick look and it looks great, I will study it as soon as I can.

Once again many thanks to all you good people and best wishes from Spain,

 Maria

I have seen quite  a lot of RC baptisms without a godfather, in one family in my tree I see that godfathers only appear when the child had brothers that were old enough or brothers-in law (yes, a large family, 20 children!). Those were baptisms in both Liverpool and Hulme.
I also have one with no godfather or godmother at all (a baptism at home).
And yes, several times the grandmother was godmother (again, no godfather).

Thank you very much Loes, greatly appreciated.

Can someone please tell me where I should go for R.C. Marriages for S. Manchester & Bucklow as I am not at all familiar with the parish or civil divisions in Manchester.

 Veronica Kathleen M.L. Pitt-Lancaster married Leon D. Mercer June Q 1927 in S. Manchester
Horace Francis H.A. Pitt-Lancaster married Ethel Mootz Sept. Q 1934 in Bucklow
Bernardine Gertrude Pitt)Lancaster married Herbert Morrison  sept Q 1928 in Manchester S.
Ethel Pitt-Lancaster remarried to Maurice G. Hulme Sept. Q 1953 in Bucklow after her first husband died.

 Any help greatly appreciated,

 Maria

The Manchester Archives have the church marriages, including RC, of S Manchester on microfilm. Not sure if they are complete. There is an ordering service for prints, but then you need to know the church and exact date. And for those you need the marriage certificate.
Bucklow, probably something like that, but I don't know where. Maybe Chester?

Why don't you just order the marriage certificates?  When you live outside the UK, to order them from Manchester is far quicker than from the GRO (it was still like that last year).
 http://www.manchester.gov.uk/info/323/birth-historical_searches/1144/registration-copy_certificates/4

Bucklow certificates maybe in Trafford, but you can email them
 http://www.trafford.gov.uk/communityandliving/registrars/copycertificates/

And of course you can order all of them from the GRO. Easier, but delivery can be slow.

				Hi,

The two South Manchester marriages are showing on Lancashire BMD as Chorlton on Medlock Registry Office or Registrar Attended.

 www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

I would have thought the most likely RC churches in Chorlton on Medlock would have been either Holy Name or St Augustines.

Sorry its doesn't narrow it down much.  Roman Catholic records are more difficult to access online.  I would agree with Loes in that ordering the marriage certificates might be the best way to go.

I live abroad and usually order online from the GRO.  Usually I order with the GRO reference and it takes them 4 days to process and despatch the certificate plus time in post (about 4-5 days in my case).  If you order without the GRO reference it does take them longer to process the order (15  days I think).

				Hi Maria,

Bucklow is a registration district in Cheshire - there is a list here of the areas that it covers:

 http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/bucklow.html

Tracking down the church might be difficult as it could be any within these areas.  There is a local index for the area which is still being worked on at www.cheshirebmd.org.uk but unfortunately the marriages you are looking for aren't there yet and if they were they would probably show register office or registrar attended like the one's for Manchester South.  The easiest way would probably be to order the certificates as per the advice above.
