Thanks for looking.  They were born, married and died in Hawick so I don't know where else to look.  Is the village of Wilton listed separately, that's very close to Hawick.

Thanks

In Roxburgh I found 7 John Shiel's but none with Janet as a wife... I checked Wilton too

I found 4 Births for "Shiel's" in Wilton a George, two John's and a Thomas

For John in Hawick, I found 6 births, 9 Deaths and 2 marriages...

will happily investigate further if you have any other ideas...

Thanks so much for looking.  I succumbed to Scotlandspeople and spent a few dollars searching for my Shiel family.  You will see some of the results in the "Unwanted" documents section!  But I was successful with three births and I did find John, Janet and two sons on the 1891 census in Hawick.  The money runs away when you are searching, but as I keep saying to myself, "It's cheaper than a visit to Scotland!"

I'm still missing other members of the family but I really believe that lots of people were missed out during the Census.  I have found that to be true of several of my families that I know were living in a place but just didn't exist on the census.

One question:  I've offered the unwanted birth certs up, can I do the same for the Census information on the pages that I purchased?

Thanks
DianeM

Diane...
Have you been to the LDS and ordered and read films from the area and time frame you are interested in?

No I haven't, but I fully intend to find the nearest one and spend some time there.  What should I look for when I am there?  Do they have a lot more than the search of the IGI produces?

Thank you very much for sending the photo.  I don't have anyone that I know of from Hassendean.  But it's quite possible that they may be first or second cousins.  It's a link to another Shiel family for sure.

Thanks again

Thanks very much for the photo.  What a lot of info is on that headstone.  I have an Isabella Shiel who died in 1888, but with a different husband.  I couldn't read the date on the stone.

It's given me another lead to follow, and I thank you very much for that.

I think Melrose and Gattonside are only a stones
through away from each other. Our Shiel families may
be connected somehow.
Thanks
