Title: Fairbairn/Smith Marriage South Africa
Post by: peelaw66 on Friday 02 September 11 16:57 BST (UK)
Hi

I am trying to trace the marriage of William Archibald Shaw Fairbairn B 1855 Panmure East London Africa who married an Anna Georgina Smith B 1851 Jamaica.   Children born to the marriage were Flora M D, William Oakdale Faunce Fairbairn, St George Donald Frere, Archibald MacDonald Duff and Lindley G G Fairbairn - all born in Cape Colony, so I am not sure if the marriage took place in Cape Colony, Jamaica or UK - any ideas please.

Many thanks.

Hi found this on National Archives of South Africa (NASA)
Database: All Archives Repositories and National Registers of non-public records. Go to the Cape Town archives type in the name in the search box and hit enter.

Cheers Derek

Hello,i have been going through my family history, and have found a marrige between Norah Helen Moniva(Noni) Meugens and Archibald Mcdonald Duff Fairbairn, but this was on 12/09/1934 in Victoria,BC,Canada, and that Arcibald was born 02/02/1888, and that they had a son by the name of Michael Anthony(Tony), does this help you in any way,
Many thanks John

Hi John

Re Archibald MacDonald Duff Fairbairn dob 1888 Cape Colony, I have his father as William Archibald Shaw Fairbairn dob 1855 Panmure East London SA, mother as Anna Georgina Smith dob 1851 Jamaica.

I have his residence in Clapham London in 1901.

Draft Registration Card for 18th Oct 1917 USA listed married with 1 child- so he was married before Nora Meugens

Arrival 27 Dec 1934 Victoria British Columbia
Arrival 1 May 1937 Southampton (occupation Private secretary to Lt Gen B.C.)
Arrival 7 May 1956 Southampton (Artist)
Death 1979 California aged 91.

I have William A S Fairbairn arriving in England at Liverppol in 1919 aged 69 and that he died on 26 June 1928 back in SA.

Achibald had siblings:-
Flora M D dob 1883
William Oakdale Faunce 1885
St George Donald Frere 1887
Lindley G G 1893

I have been trying to find a marriage for WAS Fairbairn and Anna Georgina Smith but not sure where they may have married.

Do these people seem to be the same as in your tree?

Hope you can follow my ramblings.

Regards

Although I don't know where William Shaw FB married Anna Georgina SMITH, I can add that there are naturalization papers in San Francisco for their son Archibald MacDonald Duff FAIRBAIRN (1954)
Also that Gordon Adam FAIRBAIRN, son of St George Frere FAIRBAIRN, Archibald's brother, died in Arizona in 2001.

I kept tripping over this family when trying to sort out some Donalds, Gordons, and Archibalds in my own family around Vancouver, thinking I'd found my lot, but no.

Should anyone know where William Shaw FAIRBAIRN belongs, I would be interested to know.
And if any direct male line FAIRBAIRNs, from this, or any other line for that matter, are interested in seeing where they "fit" please do send them along to the FAIRBAIRN DNA Project
http://dnasurnames.info/lineages/spFAIRBAIRNLineages.htm
as we've had quite a bit of success with matches to date.

I will go through some papers of my father's (AMDF) and see what I can find.
I have found a tentative connection between Ednam, Scotland and WAS birth in Swellendam among the 1820 Settlers but haven't verified it.

Do you have a Vancouver connection?    Will get more info for you.
Regards

Thanks for your interest.

I don't know of a connection to Vancouver but I have a distant cousin in Calgary who is descended from the Smiths and connected to the Fairbairns.

Thanks again.

Hi maybay1,
Interested why you think there may be an Ednam connection.
Many FAIRBAIRN trees work back to some FAIRBAIRNs reported to have (head)"stones at Ednam" but unless someone can come up with some earlier transcriptions than currently exist, or than I've yet found, these are unverified.

Some of the pedigrees, verified, unverified, and fanciful, may be found, with comments, on the summary pages of the FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA project at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/fairbairn/pats
use your browser and search the page for references to Ednam - there should be two main references, one to the "stones" etc, and another to the blacksmith family from Ednam, that of Edward FAIRBAIRN & Jane DAVIDSON.
This latter line's descendant Edward b. 1815 went to Australia at least via Sth Africa where he may have met and/or married his wife Catherine Elizabeth FORTNER.

Should you be, or have knowledge of, a direct male line FAIRBAIRN for either your line, or that of the Ednam blacksmiths above, the FAIRBAIRN Surname DNA project would love to hear from you/them - good discounts going until the end of the month, over and above the normal project discounts. (click on order at the above link - Y-DNA37 minimum, Y-DNA67 preferred as interesting things show up at that level to help us group/separate FAIRBAIRN lines).
Most of the Scottish Borders lines have proven to be conected to a greater or lesser extent.
Love to know where your grandfather WAS FB "fits".
Regards

Lorna

Hello, just happen to be looking for info about my great-grandfather, Archibald MacDonald Duff (AMD) Fairbairn, and came across your posts. My name is Sandi and I'm in Victoria, BC Canada.

AMD was the father of my grandfather, Kenneth Fairbairn. I did not ever get to meet AMD.

Not sure if I can help you answer any questions or not, but if so, please let me know.

regards,
Sandi
