Hi
Would anybody be able to look up a marriage at Ryde, Isle of Wight between Richard Fegen and Jane Potts Banks on the 13 May 1831.
Looking for fathers and mothers names.
Thanks
Gabi

Hi Gabi, welcome to Rootschat.
Unfortunately pre registration (1837) do not have marriage certificates only the parish record entry and they do not include parents names, or addresses , only the couples, whether of the parish, date and witnesses.
Sometimes you can get lucky if a witnesses is a parent or close family member.
You would be better looking for their baptism record.

Hi Gabi, I have just had a look at the marriage on Familysearch.org and it was in 1813 and not 1831 as stated.......
Richard Fegen of St. Lawrence, Ramsgate, Kent married Jane Potts Banks in 1813 at St. Thomas, Ryde

Thanks for that. Will need to check the baptisms, but a real problem as Richard was in the Navy and I have no idea where he was born.

I see he was from St Lawrence, Kent. How would i find out his age at marriage. There are two Richards born about 3 years apart.

Can I ask, how do you know he was in the Navy?

Hi Martin
Found reference to his marriage and his promotions in the newspapers and old naval books.
The whole family is in the navy!

How would i find out his age at marriage.
No ages were given on the parish register entry, you may be able to determine his age at the date of his marriage if his birth date is given on any naval records. :-\

I've no idea if this is your man, but the National Archives has an entry for HMS Leviathan (ADM 101/106/1B), in which a Richard Fegan, seaman, aged 22 is placed on the sick list. This entry is dated 1805.

The IGI (Familysearch) has a submitted record of a Richard Feagan baptised 5.10.1783 St Lawrence (Thanet) Kent.
father James Feagan mother Sarah.
Although submitted (not taken from the actual parish record) is does give a batch number 8501834 Sheet 02 Source Call 1396006
If this is your man then he would be around 30 at the time of his marriage, which is quite usual for men in the services to marry later rather then sooner.
Have you found any children born to this couple ??? as there are often clues in their childrens names as to the grandparents.

Martin,
The baptism I have just found, fits with the entry you have found.
1805 - 1783 = 22
So I wonder if he name was mis spelt :-\

Given the level of illiteracy I've learnt not to regard the spelling of names, other than perhaps phonetically, as important; similarly dates of birth!
But, on the mounting evidence it is looking like the same man.

Hi Gabi
On a hunch I checked the index of Coastguard Entrants and found one for Richard Fegen, appointed to the Revenue Cruiser Lapwing on 28 November 1822. A subsequent check of her muster roll turned up that Richard was infact a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy (seniority 8 November 1806) and had been appointed Commander of Lapwing.
This prompted me to check O'Byrne's Naval Biography (1849) and I found an entry for Richard, which not only confirms his marriage to Miss Banks at Ryde, but also confirms that he was serving on HMS Leviathan. If you have not yet seen it he certainly had a colourful career!

Hi All
Thanks for the help.
Just wanted to confirm with you Martin.
If his date of seniority is after the date of his being on the HMS Leviathan on sick leave, would this be correct to assume he is the same man?

I'm inclined to think that it is the same man, because although he was first a Midshipman in 1794 on HMS London, Lieut Commander James Fegen, he would not be described as an officer until Commissioned, although the description 'seaman' is rather unusual.
I've highlighted his first Captain, because it was common for young men to be appointed Midshipmen on a family members ship, in this case possibly his fathers.
I also wondered if you had checked at the National Archives to see if his Lieut's Passing Papers have survived. If they have, they could contain vital family information.

Hi Martin
Thanks for the info. You have inadvertantly confirmed that it is the same man as I have his entry into the navy as 1794.
I will definitely attempt to gain access to his info from the archives.
Thanks to you all. This has been a 10year mystery solved in only a few days.
