Title: Heaton family, St Helens area.
Post by: Tea Time on Wednesday 31 August 11 09:19 BST (UK)
I'm having difficulty finding information about a Lawrence Heaton, born abt. 1893 in Prescot, St Helens. If its possible, could someone check him out for me, please? I'm looking especially for siblings, parents, grandparents, but anything that would help.

Hi Tea Time,
This is the only one I could find;

I can go back further with this Family but need to confirm what info post 1893 you have for Lawrence.

You need Lawrences Marriage Cert and then his Birth Cert.
Do you have them?

JOHN Heatons Parents seem to be PETER Heaton and Elizabeth FOSTER who Married 1859
PETER Heatons Parents appear to be WILLIAM Heaton and Margaret SIXSMITH who Married 1814.
Of course all this needs to be confirmed yet.

Trish, first of all, thanks ever so for your help.

I have a birth certificate for Lawrence Heaton, and it shows him to have been born at 83 Oldfield Street. His father is shown as John Heaton, and mother as Sarah Ann Heaton, formerly Thompson.

It seems as though this is the correct one, but as you say, it all needs confirming.

Especially the 1871 census results has given me quite a bit to chew on. I'm assuming that Peter Heaton died somewhere between 1861 and 1871. Others seem to have disappeared also. A mining accident perhaps, given the area?

No, Peter is still alive in 1871 as he appears in 1881 Census. Also Eliz is down as Mar in 1871.
He may have been just working away from home and Elizabeth is staying with her Mother.
I havent really looked for him in 1871 as I have been going back with his Family.

A couple of interesting things there. In the 1871 census is Sarah, aged 10. Which would give an approx. birth date of 1861. Earlier we have a Sarah Ann, shown on the 1901 census as being 34, which would give an approx birth date as 1867.

I'm not sure I can understand this. Are these two sisters or a generation apart?

Hi,

Trish is offline so I just checked the 1871 census which is very faint.  Sarah is aged 4 not 10.

A little update on this. From the information given, I have been able to trace that Lawrence was one of a total of 14 children born to John and Sarah Ann. Six of these died early, which of course left eight. Of these, one spouse is confirmed. I have probables to five of the others. The remaining two seem to have disappeared from radar....!

Thats the same Peter Heaton that is in my tree. Thanks for the info.

As regards the children of John Heaton, what would be the easiest way to trace their children? I do know some, but by no means all. As far as I am aware, they have all passed away bar one.

My maternal grandmother was Elizabeth Heaton from St Helens and I have found her prayer book which indicates that she lived at 35, Albert Square, Cowley Hill. In the back of the book is a list of names, presumably Heatons, giving their birth dates. This includes Lawrence who was born on the 14th October 1893. It also gives "Lawrence reg 3836 3/5 South Lancs" maybe his military service number. There is also the birthdates "Father 1st October 1860" and "Mother 23rd March 1867" Also birthdates for Lambert, James, Albert, John, Stanley, Herbert and Alfred though it does not say that these are Heatons. Please contact me if I can be of further help.

Lawrence Heaton attested 22 May 1915 in St Helens as number 3836 in 3/5th Bn South Lancashire Regiment. His home address is given as Atherton Street, St Helens - unable to read number.

He was renumbered as 241480 sometime during WW1 and was demobilised as acting corporal  18 March 1919. Home address given as 68 Atherton Street, St Helens.
