Title: Two McDowell & Nesbitt marriages
Post by: debquilter on Wednesday 31 August 11 04:26 BST (UK)
Ann McDowell married Alexander Nesbitt b. abt 1838 on June 27, 1861 in the Parish of Kirkinriola.  Her sister, Martha McDowell married Thomas Nesbitt b. abt 1840 on June 13 1861 in the Parish of Kirkinriola.  These families lived in or close to Taylorstown, Ballyscullion, County Antrim.  They were Presbyterians.  Is it possible to see who the parents were for these Nesbitt men?  Are they cousins?

Hi,
Cannot locate Mothers' names but Alexander's father was William and Thomas' father was John. In my source the spelling of Alexander's surname was NESBIT. This was confirmed by a second source.

Regards

Hi,
Should have added that the Brides' fathers were both called Samuel but the marriages took place in different churches. Ann was married in Ballymena 2nd Presbyterian church, parish of Kirkinriola and Martha was married in Grange Presbyterian Church, Ballyscullion Grange Parish. Both parishes are in the Ballymena District.

Regards

I am, according to DNA, related to the Nesbitts of Taylorstown. I am also related to Mark Nesbitt, of that Ilk, the current Chief of Clan Nisbet, a boarders clan, or family.

The first family found in Taylorstown is:
Thomas Nesbitt+Jennie McDowell
       Robert Nesbitt b. 1811+Nancy Rankin b. 1813
Thomas Nesbitt b. 1843+Margaret Hanna (to America)
                      Thomas Nesbitt b. 1873+Elizabeth Smith

Several of us, that match DNA, live in America. One, that we know of lives in England and one in Australia.

Looking for more information

Thanks,
Nez

Hi Nez!  Yes, I know that branch of the family that went to America.  They are most probably my cousins but we are having trouble proving this.  I have no male Nesbitts left to do the DNA testing.  Thank you for your comment.

Debroah,

Send me your e-mail address and I will put you in touch with several of the family that can trace their ancestors to Taylorstown.

Hi, just noticed this post.

My Gx4 grandfather Smith McDowell also married a Nesbitt.  His second wife was Esther Nesbitt and her father was also named William.   The married in Ballymena on 8th July 1848.  I only have the civil record, no parish records but I have other family - McDowell - records for 3rd Presbyterian Ballymena.   Esther was born c. 1810 so although it's possible she was Alexander's (born c. 1838) it's a bit of a stretch.
