Title: research in Malaysia
Post by: meggy1 on Tuesday 30 August 11 16:52 BST (UK)
Hi all,

I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience of looking at family records in Malaysia?

My Mother-in-law (now in her eighties) knows nothing of her parents' background other than that her father's parents emigrated from somewhere in China! Her parents were

Wee Kok Chee (father) and Law Beik Kim (mother) in case anyone recognises them!

I think they may have been in Penang. I would be grateful for any advice as to where to start!

Regards

Meggy1

Unfortunately records may be hard to find but your best bet is to have a look at clan associations. These clans were set up to help Chinese immigrants when they arrived. They would record all male line members of the family in a lot of detail so it's worth taking a look at that.

My mother's family is Malaysian and it really helped me since we found out that her family first arrived in Malaysia roughly during the late 1600s.
