Looking for Bernard Straney (b1805?) and wife Ann they would have had several children by 1841 including son James Pagan, (familysearch has him baptized in 1834 at St Cuthberts).
I am also interested in the family of his sister Margaret Dobie, (b.1808 m William Dobie had children John Adam Sarah Frances by 1841) their father John Straney would have been still alive then and I would like to know where he lived in relation to his surviving children.
In 1856 a Margaret Dobie signed the death reg of her nephew-in-law James Devine (married to her namesake Margaret Straney) giving their address as English Damside, James had died of scrofula at age 32.
The Devine's were also from Ireland/Scotland and I am interested in how the Irish settled in Carlisle to work in the mills.

Familysearch.org has these children to Bernard Straney and Ann....
Margaret bapt. 18 Nov 1827 St. Cuthbert, Carlisle
Frances bapt. 18 Nov 1827 St Cuthbert, Carlisle
John bapt. 28 Apr 1832 St Cuthbert Carlisle
Looks like Margaret and Frances were twins!
Have found the birth of a Bernard Strangey on Familysearch on 20 May 1792 at St Mary, Carlisle. Parents shown as
John Straney and Frances Lanaughan. Could this be him and not born around 1805?

Yes the FamilySearch is the family.
But Bernard death cert in 1879 Annan has him as 74 (filled out by grandson, who knew Bernard's parents names and occupations) so his birth date is questionable. John Straney was an Irish weaver and possibly came over after 1797 uprising. They were from Down. The family also has 3 daughters dying in Carlisle 1803-10 so Margaret and Bernard may have been the only survivors.
Interesting about referring to Thomas as step-son, hmmmm, Ann's maiden name was Carr so maybe Bernard had suspicions about his parentage???? I like to think they had a sense of humour and kept the census taker on his toes!

I suspect he was actually their nephew http://tinyurl.com/3ujvt6d
Barnie was 50 in 1851.
I think his children's names suggest he may have been a son of John and Frances. He may even have been a second son of that name, the first one having died. :-\
