I am wondering if there are any descendants of Peter Leith Omand who may see this post. Peter was my great grandfather and was born in Orkney in 1829. He emigrated to Victoria and married Ann Spence in Geelong in 1857. They had 4 children there: James b.? d.1858, Peter Spence Omand b.1859, Elizabeth Ann Omand b.1861 and James Spencer Omand b.1866. They then moved to Dunedin and had 3 more children: Alena [my grandmother] b.1874, William John b.1875 and Edwin Allan b.1880.
Alena married Walter Wright and they lived in Fairfax Street, Dunedin and that was Peter's last address when he died in 1914. He was buried with his wife, Ann who died in 1906 in the Northern Cemetery.
I am trying to collect photos of various family members and I would be very pleased if anyone who may have any Omand family photos would share them with me.
I have a lot of history of the Omands in Orkney including Peter's direct ancestors dating back to John Omand who died in 1520, also court records of when they first farmed land in Orkney. I would be happy to share this with anyone interested in this family.

Hi Bob,
I have a John LILBURN on one of my branches who was born at Hoy and Graemsay OKI SCT in October 1865, the son of James Lilburn and Ann OMAN/D. Ann was born about 1827 at Graemsay. Her parents were Joseph Omand, born about 1777) and Isabella (born about 1801).
James Lilburn and Ann OMAN/D had three children that I know of: James born 1849; Joanne born 1856; and John, all born at Hoy and Graemsay. The following census entries might be of interest:
1841 Census: 3-26 House Upper Quoys.
OMAN Joseph 45 Farmer Orkney
OMAN Isabella 40 his wife Orkney
OMAN Margret 15 Pleter Orkney
OMAN Ann 14 Pleter Orkney
OMAN Joseph 12 Orkney
OMAN Cecilia 9 Orkney
OMAN Jean 7 Orkney
OMAN Penelopy 5 Orkney
LYON Cecilia 45 female servant Orkney
1861 Census: 4-39 Upper Quoys.

LILBURN Isabella D 9 Farmer's daughter OKI: Graemsay
LILBURN Joann D 5 Farmer's daughter OKI: Graemsay
LILBURN Mary D 4m Farmer's daughter OKI: Graemsay

LILLBURN Ann HD W 45 farmer's widow of 25 acres OKI: Graemsay

LILLBURN May D 10 Scholar OKI: Graemsay
LILLBURN Williamina D 7 Scholar OKI: Graemsay
LILLBURN John S 5 Scholar OKI: Graemsay
HARPER Peter V 40 Mason OKI: Stennes
It’s interesting that your OMAND family lived at Dunedin, as John Lilburn lived at Port Chalmers with his wife Annie Jane née HEALEY and their children between 1896 and about 1908. I wonder if they knew each other.

Hi Spades
Thanks for your reply. I don't think there is any connection in these Omands as my family came from Stenness in Orkney and had been there for several generations.
Omand is not a common name in NZ. Peter Spence Omand married here and had 5 daughters and 1 son, John Wright Omand who was killed in WW1. Edwin Allan Omand also married here and had 1 son and 2 daughters so there were not many chances of the name to carry on. However there are some descendant's in NZ so some time I may make contact.

There is an ancestry tree that is for Peter Spence ORmand and has a 1903 photo from the Otago Witness, which may be on Papers past, if you don't already have it

Hi Althea
Thanks for your reply. I have tried to find the ancestor tree for Peter Omand but have had no success. Is there a link to access this and if so can you forward it?

I dont kow if you are aware that John Lillburn's sister Williamina Jane Linklater Lilburn born 25-8-1863 on Graemsay married a William Johnstone Pagan born 20-5-1865 Moffat, Dumfries in Pollockshields, Glasgow on 20-2-1890 they had at least 1 child an Annie Pagan 1893 in Govan and who married a Frederick Coombe in New Zealand.
William Pagan died 1928 and WWillimina 12-11-1939 both in New Zealand.
I have recorded 3 children of John Lilburn, John 19-4-1898, Minnie 1900, and Ilene Anne 1898. I dont know if this is correct. John may have remarried an Annie Campbell in 1928.
My website at robertwhitton.eu has many of the families from Graemsay recorded.

You are correct on all counts. And thank you for the information about Willliamina LILBURN. Any idea when she arrived in NZ?
I will PM you tomorrow.

Hi Bob,
I am researching the OMOND family descended from Thomas OMOND (1843 Eday, Orkney - 1911 Port Chalmers, NZ) and his wife Catherine MILLER.
So far I have failed to find the arrival in NZ of Thomas - he was in the census in Kirkwall in 1861 as a 17 year old ships carpenter; and must have arrived in NZ before 1872, as he was both married and purchased land at Lower Harbour that year.
Have you come across any OMOND arrivals?
In my searching I have found this that may interest you - I found it on the Papers Past website [https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz]:
Marriage: On the 26th January 1882, at the residence of the bride’s parents, Elgin House, Cumberland street, by the Rev Dr Stuart, Peter Spence, eldest son of Mr Peter Omand, to Susannah Farnley-Bowie, youngest daughter of Mr John Drew. [OTAGO WITNESS, ISSUE 1577, 4 FEBRUARY 1882]
Sincerely,
Pip

Hi Pip
Thank you for your no te regarding Thomas Omond. I have not come across any information as my family is spelt Omand. I have just looked up Thomas records on the Dunedin cemetery records and his death is recorded as 24 Sept 1911 and noted that he lived for 40 years in NZ. That makes him arriving here in 1871. You may have already looked on that site. I did find a record on Family Search that shows him married to Catherine at Port Chalmers and they had a son born1874, died 1957.
Yes I have the details of Peter Spence Omand, he was my great uncle on my mothers side and his father, Peter was my great grandfather.
Sorry that I am unable to help further.
Kind regards Bob.

My wife is Kate Taurima nee Omand, her father is Christopher Lex Omand, her grandfather is Edwin Allan Omand. We live in Christchurch and only discovered yesterday that she has relatives predominantly in Dunedin
I would love to link her up with whānau.
