Hi
Have Helen McCulloch who was born abt 1795, place
51 census says British Subject, Servant Sea
81 census says Island of Corsica
91 census says Corsica
Parents John McCulloch and Margaret Ross
She married a John Dick he died in 1837.
Helen died 19.12 1891 Markinch in Fife.
I can't find anything about her parents or why she was born in Corsica any help would be good.
-
according to her death cert on SP her father was a coachman so maybe her parents were abroad with a 'family'.

Hi
Is there any way or place I could find out about that.
-

Hi
Only have things about Helen and her parents names sorry.
-
Not sure, from information given, if the birth was on Corsica or at sea near Corsica. The National Archives at Kew keeps Foreign registers and returns (1627-1960). For a short time around 1795 Corsica was an "Anglo-Corsican kingdom" with George III represented by a Viceroy. Presumably there would be other UK diplomats/civil servants there as well as Navy personnel. Maybe John McCulloch and wife were servants to one of those.

there is a tree on A* for this family. supect this isn't yours??
info given (to verify)
Helen born: 1794 in Corscia, Haute-Corse, Corse, France
1841: Markinch
John Dick 60
Healoner Dick 45
Healoner Dick 15
Isabella Dick 10
John Miller 15

Margaret Lamb 12
Kate L Anderson 17
Eleanor Dick 97
it might help to find when the family (or just helen) returned to scotland.

found a problem!! marriage cert 13/5/1815 midlothian states:
John Dick, ironfounder .... and Helen mcculloch of Edinburgh, daughter of David Mcculloch, gentlemans servant of the parish of Markinch.....
so death cert says father John - this says david and seems to be the same family - father comes from Markinch
wonder whether john & david were brothers and both had a daughter helen?????

Hi
I think in the 1841 census it says John is a merchant but they have Helen down as Healoner.
At the moment I only have John Dick but by looking at another tree the have John and Helen married in Edinburgh children
Helen
Isobel
David
John married to Janet Bogie which is right
and Margaret but can't say if the other children are correct.
Thanks

Hi
I have John's death as 1837 but if I think I found him in the 1841 census. Am getting a bit confused.
-
the fife death index has several john Dicks in Markinch but this one i think is yours:
John Dick, markinch,Thornton bur 9/6/1844
husband of Healoner Macculloch
the problem we do have is that marriage - fathers name David instead of John.

almost looks as if there are 2 mccullochs - helen & Eleanor (Healoner) but both seem to be married to a John Dick.
the one died 1891 father John & mother Margaret ross has informant as james lamb, grandson. - 1891 census i posted has margaret lamb with Eleanor Dick so that ties those together..
having a look around /think about this.

i have found some other children for a David Mcculloch & Margaret Ross but not a helen /eleanor so far and not a marriage either

john Macculloch = margaret Ross 4/12/1812 Dingwall, Ross & cromarty
which is a long way from Fife!!

also way after the Helen b. 1793 died 1891 (birth from death age 98).

Hi
The 1891 census has a Margaret Lamb with her.
Yes the death certificate I have says informant James Lamb and she was 98 years when she died.
