If the marriage cert doesn't mention which unit he was in, it might be worth checking birth certs for his children - these sometimes give details of the father's regiment or unit under his occupation.

Are you certain the marriage was in 1877 ?

I see a possible match on the BMD Index in 1871.. along with a birth of a William Bennett to the couple in December 1871 in the extracted birth collection on familysearch.

Thanks for the reply but i dont think that is my Thomas, as far as i can make out Thomas was Scottish according to census, and his wife Bridget was Irish, they had three children all born in India, so Thomas was in the militry, if the marriage cert i found is in fact the Thomas i'm looking for would he have been stationed in Mayo? cant find death cert for Thomas and on Bridgets it only states fathers name which is the same as marriage sorry if i'm rambling on a bit thanks for the input anyway :)
