From family search pilot John Hammett married Elizabeth Hannan in Youghal, Feb 23rd 1852. He was a widower and his father was John Hammett. She was single and her father was Joseph Hannan.

Oh, thank you so much Culbaire. I've been trying to find my grt, grt mothers' family. Do by chance have any more info on Elizabeth Hanan's mom? Tried to locate her birth papers in Ireland but was told that only those from 1864 are listed. Where can I possibly get a copy of her birth paper?

Registration of births started in 1864- there are no birth certificates earlier than this so you'd need to see if church records exist.

The only info I have is that posted in my first post. This link should work to where I found that. https://www.familysearch.org/search/records#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3AElizabeth%20%2Bsurname%3AHannan%20%2Bany_place%3ACork%20%2Bany_year%3A1852-1852~
(first link was to family search pilot -(closed tuesday 23rd August)). Looks like you need to try and access church records in Youghal Co Cork. Have no knowledge re church records in Cork but I am sure someone here will be able to give you more info.

The RC records for Youghal are on the pay to view site www.rootsireland.ie
You can search for free and glean quite a lot of info but it's €5 a record to download.
CoI records are not online.

Due to the date, the 1852 marriage would probably be non-Catholic, unless it took place in a registry office - so possibly Church of Ireland.
The Representative Church Body Library in Co. Dublin holds many of the historic CofI records, and they have details for the parish of Youghal back as far as 1666. As agho mentioned these are not available online for this parish, you would have to visit the RCB library to view them.
You could establish a few additional details that might help, by ordering the marriage cert for John and Elizabeth. e.g. this would show the name of the Church, and the denomination. Occupations for the groom and the two fathers, names of two witnesses, and also current residences for the bride and groom (although these can be basic). These are the details you need to order the cert from the GRO :
Name: John Hammett
Registration district: Middleton
Event type: Marriage
Year: 1852
Volume : 8 / Page : 78
Name: Elizabeth Hannan
[same references as John]
see :

Details included on a Marriage Cert (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,433042.0.html)

p.s. not sure why the civil marriage was listed in the district of Midleton and yet the extracted record states Youghal.. but the districts are adjacent.

It's possible the extracted record is from the church register hence why it says Youghal. This was possibly the nearest CoI. If they lived between Youghal & Midleton then Midleton could have been the nearest registrar's district. Midleton was a very extensive district covering a wide area of East Cork.

Thanks for all the helpful info. I shall look into getting their marriage certs. I tried the site for ordering but didn't get it quite right. Will try again later. It seems odd . According to my cousin's research so far, John Hammett may have married 3 times, first to Dorothea Dudley second to Elizabeth Dudley then to Elizabeth Hanan. I can understand that he may have been widowed ...but I'm a bit perplexed. Anyway, I'll try to get marriage records to figure it out.. It is said that John Hammett was born in Bandon, Ireland. Any info on what county is that? Thanks again..

Hi Nicca,
John Hammett was my great-great-great-granduncle. I am descended from his sister Jane. I have been dabbling in family history for years now and have a good bit of Hammett info if you are interested. The Hammetts were Church of Ireland as were the Dudleys, I am not sure about the Hanans, they may have been COI or RC. John was a shoemaker by profession like his father but sadly his first wife Dorothea died in the famine as did their two little daughters. He married again but it is a bit confusing as to if he married once more to Elizabeth Hanan in 1852 in Youghal, or if he did marry an Emily/Elizabeth Dudley as well, as he gives his wife Elizabeth's maiden name as Dudley on a later birth registration. But Elizabeth Hanan outlived John, so he didn't marry again after her. John and Elizabeth moved to London after the famine, and the family in Ireland lost touch with them. But John's son John and daughter Mary Eliza went on to have families of their own. We think he also had a son George who may have died of Smallpox in 1881.
How are you related to John?
All the best
Natasha

Hi Natashawitch
I am related to John Hammett on my grandma’s side of the family. My grandma’s grandma was Mary Eliza Day new Hammett from Youghal Ireland. I am so sorry that I couldn’t have replied earlier. Life happens. I went to Youghal 2 years ago to visit my grandparents birth place. I found gravestones at the collegiate Church of St Mary’s and also entries of the Dudley’s ,Hannons and Hammetts. I am still on my quest to learn more about my ancestors roots. Mary Eliza married Charles Day and moved to London. There they had two children Ada Louisa and Charles John Day. Please if you get this message we can correspond more. My email is (*)
Best wishes
