Hi, I have an interest in Grave D12 in Newhaven Cemetery - I know it's a pauper's grave and so there won't be a headstone, but is there a map online indicating where it would be please?
-
i live in Newhaven can i help you ?
there isn't a map online that i know of
-
Hi Toni, Thanks for the offer but I really don't think there will be a headstone, the occupant of the grave died in 1956 after dying in Newhaven Downs Hospital and it was previously occupied by somebody dying in 1892, no connection.
I looked at googlemaps and found that it was a pretty cemetery and just wanted to add the location to my file, together with a screenshot from the streetview.
It was just a thought since many of the Liverpool cemeteries have plans online, probably because they are much larger.
Thanks again
Mary

I know a man who probably does have one as he does tours there. I'll see what I can do

Mary sent you a PM with my email, I have a copy for you and the following information
This map shows the part of the Cemetery which is immediately to the right of the entrance on Lewes Road - one of the oldest parts of the Cemetery.
There are actually two graves numbered D12 - an adults' grave and a child's grave - both quite close to each other and I have highlighted them both in yellow. As you would expect, the larger grave is the adults' one. Both graves are unpurchased graves. The adults' grave contains the bodies of William Coleman who was interred on 7th December 1892 aged 51 and Francis Louis Longford, who was interred on 7th January 1957 aged 87. The child's grave contains the body of Jessie Mabel Dorothy Goddard who was interred on 5 February 1896 aged 3 years and 9 months.
As the graves are unpurchased there are no headstones. Most of the surrounding graves are also unpurchased and accordingly unmarked. I have marked on the map the nearest graves that are in line with one or other of the graves and which should have memorials on them to try and help you to locate the patch of grass you are looking for.

Thank you very much Pete I knew it was a general grave - the lady from the Council who gave me the details actually did call it a pauper's grave - so I knew it would be a patch of grass rather than a headstone.
Yes you have the correct grave for Francis Louis Longford who was my grandmother's first husband, whose death I have only recently discovered. His death certificate says he was a street musician, and he was 87 years old when he died so sometime I hope to check for any entries in newspapers to see if he was a bit of a vagrant.
As I am in Merseyside I have no idea when I am likely to visit Sussex but when I do one day I will be able to visit the cemetery and thanks to you, locate just where the grave is.
Thank you Toni for your lovely offer, but unless you were going for yourself then I wouldn't put you to any trouble since the link to "Where's the Path" from Pete is excellent, I haven't come across this before.
If I can help with anything for you in Lancashire/Merseyside, don't forget to give me a shout - one good turn always deserves another :D

Hi, cheeky I know, but could you get me a plan as well, Petemas?
Thanks, Nicky.
-
Hi Nicky, I haven't got it now and have no idea how I got it- may have emailed the town council. I've looked to see if there is one on line but doesn't look like it. Maybe MaryA has a copy still? Pete
-
I do indeed, but you will need to make a couple more posts before you can send me a pm with your email address. As it is a pdf file I can't upload it to a photo hosting site, it will need to be emailed to you.

Don't know if this will be any good but I have tried to convert it to a .jpg file.

Hi Mary
Thanks, this is great. If I can ever be of any assistance ...
Kind Regards
Nicky

You're welcome, just pass on the good turn if somebody ever asks, it's a good way to work here on Rootschat.

Hello MaryA, Pete & Nicky,
I'm going to find the plan very helpful when I get chance to visit and I'm sure many others will too, many thanks to you.
Regards
David.

I know this is long outdated for the OP's request, however I can confirm there is a plan which you can obtain information about at Newhaven Town Council's office for anyone else searching this topic. Alternatively you could email the office at admin AT newhaventowncouncil.gov.uk for this and other information. Hope this helps. :)

Hi NTC Worker
I have found the staff at Newhaven very helpful and the information they provide is free (some councils take note!)
-
Thank you for your comments, as this is a long outstanding piece of research on this man it's not outdated, all little snippets add to my collection, but in this case the grave appears to be a general one and unmarked. It's this man's life that interests me now, if I ever find any clues to it.
