Title: hamilton family pollockshaws
Post by: jasiain on Sunday 21 August 11 20:34 BST (UK)
Looking for info on a John Hamilton, a Freestone quarrier who died age 59 in 1877 ( registered Eastwood), he was married to Charlotte Johnstone ( b 1830 d 1886) Johns parents were Matthew Hamilton also a quarrier and Agnes Stewart.
Descendants of this family apparently stayed in the round (toll ) house in Pollockshaws. Thanks

Hello Jasiain.

I'm on the otherside of the world, but it is my understanding that both Eastwood and Pollockshaws are in Renfrewshire, and perhaps you can ask the Moderator, if perhaps this thread be duplicated, or redirected.

The situation is quite mixed - While at the time of the people mentioned both Eastwood and Pollokshaws were in Renfrewshire - Modern Eastwood is now in East Renfrewshire and  Pollokshaws is in Glasgow which was for a time part of Lanarkshire (the burgh was annexed by Glasgow in the early 1900's)

Hello Myrrdin.

The problems created by a growing city. I should have been more specific. I was referring to the time of the research, and which Parish / Shire records were most likely to be found with family records. My lot, before coming to NZ, were divided by the White Cart, in the "Greater Environs of Glasgow" . Quite confusing because NZ records just state GLASGOW, however when research is undertaken, one needs to see both the Renfrewshire and the Lanarkshire records, with Glasgow to a far lessor extent.

And Glasgow of course hasn't been in Lanarkshire for over a hundred years.     Skoosh.

To try and get this back on tack - sorry I don't know of the Hamilton family but if you don't already have it, the Mitchell Library have this image of the Toll House from 1955

Image deleted due to copyright as stated.

From the Mitchell Library - The Round Toll House at Pollokshaws in 1955  copyright of Mitchell Library as per watermark

This building is still there today although a roundabout has been put up around it in a much enlarged junction.

PS Glasgow was still a part of Lanarkshire until 1930 - in 1931 it became the City & County of Glasgow and this description was used officially from then on.

Would it be possible for one of the moderators to repost this thread onto the Ireland general site,  I have purchased several census on SP and discovered that John and Charlotte were born in Ireland, but no specific county stated on the census. I dont want to duplicate and am unsure how to proceed, Thanks

Better to start a new thread in Ireland board with a link to this thread if it is the origins of the family you are seeking

John Hamilton and Charlotte Johnstone were my 3rd g. grandparents. I'm descended from their son John and his daughter Helen.
I don't know very much about the roundhouse, but the address where Helen lived with her parents was 75 King St. Pollokshaws. Was that the roundhouse?

Sorry for the late reply.
Did John marry Helen mcmeechan in 1868.?
Then their daughter Helen married twice, first to Daniel Mcdade then Ernest Leach?

I am looking over old notes but have not written anything 're the toll house, but do remember looking at the Glasgow story web site and an old photo of the roundhouse.
Will have a rummage later to see how I made the connection.
The only number I have for the Hamilton family in King street is 53 and that was in 1861.
Do you know they came over from county Tyrone (as per Wlilliams birth cert)
Great to hear from you.

Hi, my reply is very late as well! Yes, John Hamilton married Helen McMeekin (McMeechin) - spelled all kinds of ways. Their daughter Helen Hamilton married McDade (resulting in one daughter-yep, Helen again). Daniel died in India from a disease but was there and then Ernest Leach (resulting in 3 sons). Helen and Ernest and family lived in Bermuda.
