Title: Irish marraige certs
Post by: Teejo on Saturday 20 August 11 16:22 BST (UK)
Hi everyone
Was hoping someone could give me a clue on how to get certs for both my great granparents marriages. I have actually got details of both marriages from each church but he ho no fathers name's typical !
one was Bartholomew Buckley to Kate Leary 29th Feb 1876 in parish church in Kilmurry the other Denis Holland to Kate Sheehan 29th Feb 1879 ( think the 29th is wrong on this one but that's what the priest gave me ) at Parish church in Ovens.
I,ve looked at ordering certs at the GRO in Roscommon but there isn't a secure payment option and its too far from Cork to drive ( i will be in Cork in 4 weeks )
Is it possible to get copy's at the registration office in Cork city if i just showed up there does anyone know ? Would they have records for that far back ?
Regards Teejo

I suggest you give the registry office a ring to see if they can help you. You should also enquire whether they will do you a photocopy version. (GRO Roscommon do and it’s only €4 provided you quote the location, quarter, year, volume & page number, which makes their service very good value for money).

The marriage for Bartholomew Buckly to Catherine Leary was registered in Bandon (1876 Volume 5, page 32), so you will need to contact that registry office for a copy of that cert.

Denis Holland and Catherine Sheehan’s marriage was registered in Cork Jan - Mar 1879, Volume 5, page 161.

I send snail mail to Roscommon all the time with my credit card information from the US.  I have never had a problem, and in fact one time Roscommon emailed me because for some reason one day when they swiped my card it stuttered.

On the other hand, I once had the experience of going to a mall right here in Southern California and when I got home from that shopping trip, there were emails and a phone call from Bank of America saying my credit card account got locked down.  Somebody swiped the info at the mall and had a fast shopping spree with it before I was even the wiser.

Hi yeh dont really want to do that you shouldnt really send your card details through e.mail or post it really is'nt safe.Hopefully they will get a safer system set up soon. It seems quite hard to get hold of certs in Ireland, here in England it is so simple and quick you do it all online and you get the certs in a few days

I have to say I agree with skibbgirl. I have ordered several hundred certs through the post from Roscommon without any difficulty. I have no anxieties about putting my card details down on the form. It works fine for me. And they provide a good prompt service.

I have to echo Skibbgirl & Elwyn. I have also sent orders through the post without any problems whatsoever. You can also use fax.

With regard to getting certs personally in Cork, all the records for Cork County are in Adelaide Court in Cork city. As far as I know there is no facility in Bandon. If you ring them they will tell you exactly what dates they can issue certs from. While they have all the registration books from 1864 open for inspection by appointment (but there is a huge wait for appointment) I know deaths Certs are issued from 1924 but can't remember when Marriages or Births are from but I'm pretty sure it's a bit earlier.

Perhaps i will try if 3 of you seem to think its ok and you have had no problems, it certainly would be easier than getting someone to drive me into Bandon and Cork as i,m only going to be there for 4 days and time will be short. Now that Elwyn has given me the index info should be no prob. I do remember sending my poor uncle into Cork city on the bus to get one of the certs a while ago now and they told him they didnt have it it was too early !
Thanks for all your help, i can really see me moving on a bit now with this, stupid thing is i have hundreds of relations in Cork but can i get anyone to do anything no !!

I recently used the GRO snail mail option and I'm going to use it again tomorrow, they are a very helpful bunch and very fast too, posted and returned in about 3 or 4 days....

They are great aren't they! I got mine in the post today, I got my husbands Great Grandparents marriage certs which opens us up to the online census, and I got a birth cert for a great uncle and great aunt on both sides of my mothers family so I now have 2 sets of great grandparents marriages to look for now!!

Good luck on that then i,m having a nightmare ! Very hard when you only have 2 census years and of course the great great grandparents are probably dead by 1901. Will have to try and find birth certs for the great grandparents now and go from there i suppose but at least i have one parents name to go on for each

I'm on the same trail so, have now got Great Grandmothers names having found Great Grand mothers names via siblings of my grand parents who had names that weren't too common, got one result for my grandmothers birth cert but couldn't say for certain that it was hers due to the address on it, but got her sisters who had the right date of birth on it, right father, mothers name was Catherine, on my GMs one it was kate, so it's a safe bet I think anyway, addresses were different but apparently it was very common to move around a lot at that time due to the size of the houses and the increasing sizes of families....
Same with my GF he's an O Sullivan, but it turns out his Mother was an O Sullivan who married an O Sullivan so its made it easier because now I can start on the Census, a lot of our GGP's seemed to get married in and around 1911 so it's hard to place them once again, one set of my husbands GGP's got married on the 9th March 1911, but it wasn't registered until the July, and both appear on the Census as living with their families.
The best bit of Info we got was the addresses on the birth certs it makes it easier to confirm things!!

Just need to get the time now to work on the next stage, great fun though and a great history lesson!!
