Title: Great Boughton lookups
Post by: axecalibre on Saturday 20 August 11 08:09 BST (UK)
Help please, am looking for parish record of William Alma Lewis, Free BMD has his birth record as Jan-Feb-Mar 1855, Great Boughton, Cheshire.

William Alma Aylmer Lewis later records his father as Henry Lewis, Architect on his marriage certificate.  William Alma Lewis was a nurse child on 1861 Census.

Any information on his parentage would be gratefully received.  Many thanks.

The Cheshire Parish Register Project site appears to be down at the moment, try it later.

Hi

According to Familysearch. org (which has about 95% of Cheshire Parish Registers) William Alma Lewis was christened 3rd March 1855 at Lache-with-Saltney, father Henry, mother Mary.

The Great Boughton Registration District covers quite a large area, details on link below

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/great%20boughton.html

This area can be confusing as Lache is in Cheshire, England whilst Saltney is in Flintshire, Wales.

Thank you so much Andy, yes his place of birth is listed as Cheshire, Flintshire, which I found confusing, easy if you know the area!

Will have to check now on parents as on 1861 census he is listed as living with another family, as nurse child which I took to mean that he was illegitimate, however looks as if he was fostered out, maybe mother died.

Not all Registration Districts fit nicely within county boundaries and Great Boughton is one of those, whilst the bulk of it is in Cheshire, England, some is in Flintshire, Wales.

Andy have tried Family Search.org, don't what I am doing wrong but find it painfully slow to operate - is it me?  Any tips please.

Have also had a look for christening record, should I enter Lache as place as it seems that Cheshire is not finding the record?

Again so very many thanks for your speedy reply

Hi

I opened Familysearch.org then scrolled down to Browse by Location and selected Europe.

Scroll down and select England, Cheshire Parish Registers 1538 - 2000

I then searched for William Lewis, 1855 +/- 1 yr and found him. I tend to leave location blank.

Hi,

On Family search there is also a George Henry bt 1852 in Chester - he is on the 1861 census in chester with a Henry Lewis - architect's clerk b Shropshire ~1837 (but actual age 54 on page)  - difficult to read but it looks like married also a Mary Jane Lewis aged 8 - they are all down as lodgers

Junev thank you so much for that info.

Cannot find surname of wife of Henry Lewis, or marriage record that fits, it seems that she married, had children and died within a nine year period.  Unless of course she was somewhere else during 1861 census, looking for a Mary Lewis living on Welsh border.....

Their son William Alma Aylmer Lewis became a physician, when he died he left £24k.  Strange for a son who was a nurse child living with farm labourer in 1861.

If you send for the birth certificate of William Alma Lewis using the reference you gave in the first post it will give his mother's maiden name which will make it much easier to find the marriage.

Many thanks Jean, have been avoiding sending for certificate but think now it is the only way.

As William married a relative Mary Margaret Foulis, who died a few years later, I was interested in his origins, especially when I discovered how much he had left in his will.

This genealogy research keeps me curious as to the how's etc.

Again, many thanks to all who have assisted.

Hello again!

Is the William Lewis and Mary Margaret you speak of the grandparents of Wendy Desirée Aylmer Lewis Meredith? If so, I have story which my grandma (Wendy) told me about her mother's parents:

A Margaret Foulis eloped with a doctor without her family's approval. One of them (I believe it was Margaret) died after having (I believe) two children, one of whom was my great-grandmother. The story goes that these young children were brought back to the Foulis family—who slammed the door in their faces.

Please let me know if this is the connection! If not, please pardon my interruption. I'd like so very much to know more about this family line....
