Title: Llanelly House
Post by: Llanelly House on Friday 19 August 11 15:22 BST (UK)
We're currently looking for feedback on a unique concept for Wales. We are looking at opening a unique complementary, permanent visitor centre tapping into the popular theme of genealogy. The centre will provide a front end experience where you assume the identity of one of a series of characters and it's your mission to find out who you are via a series of innovative, interactive techniques.

In addition there will be a cutting edge facility for personal and assisted research, where you will be able to access databases, digital archives and resources in order to undertake your own enquiries about your identity. You can research anything from the 1911 census all the way back to the digitised Parish Records for Carmarthenshire.

The centre will be located in one of Wales' finest Georgian Town-houses, Llanelly House, which dates as far back as the 17th century and was extensively renovated in 1714 by Sir Thomas Stepney. Find out more at www.facebook.com/llanellyhouse (http://www.facebook.com/llanellyhouse)

Hello Jonathan,  :)

Sounds like a great resource for Llanelli and Carmarthenshire and what a good end to the story of Llanelly House! You have told me that visitors will not have to pay to get into the Centre as it is community based but that you aim to attract visitors to Llanelli by becoming a unique genealogy centre. I wish you luck with your venture and hope to visit the centre at some point.

Kind Regards
Morgan

After cutting through all the jargon, I think you are saying that the facilities will enable someone to research their assumed character, but will they be able to further their own personal research?

Yes we will have an exhibition room where you will research your character, this will be like a game. Then we will also have a research room where you will be able to trace your family history through our growing records.

Sounds really interesting. Would the character be able to 'dress up'?  ;) I should think this would be a great educational tool for school children of all ages (as well as adults) with the game being simpler for the younger ones.

Best of luck - I hope it is a great success.

There will be an under 6 area kidzone where they will be doing storytelling, dressing up and workshops. So the kids would be dressing up as the characters instead of playing the genealogy game which will be geared towards the older crowd.

Hello Jonathan  :)

Have the Parish Records for Carmarthenshire been digitised yet? If not, when will they be available for family historians at Llanelly House?

Kind Regards
Morgan

Everything will be available when the House opens in 2013, unfortunately its a bit of a wait but it should be worth it!
