Title: the bell family, mostly farmers at west cornforth, bishopton and elwick hall
Post by: cambria on Friday 19 August 11 13:37 BST (UK)
Please can you help me to trace descendants of John Bell born Kelloe c1792 and Dorothy Nicholson. Of several children, Augustine Bell , my direct ancestor, was born c 1836 at Bishopton but there are also links with Garmondsway Moor, specifically Fox and Hounds, West Cornforth (now shut up and for sale). Augustine also farmed at Elwick Hall, Close House near Wynyard in 1881 Census and later farmed at Whitton. His descendants are of interest to me and I know there were several "Bells" around Bishopton, Redmarshall and Carlton.I am descended from Caroline Emma Bell born 1870.

Not sure if this will help but High Grange Farm (now demolished) near Wynyard/Billingham/Newton Bewley was known locally as Bell's Farm right up until it was demolished, could be a connection.

Dan

Dear Dan
Thank you for the message. The 1881 census had Augustine Bell farming at Close House, 300 acres; may have belonged to Wynard Estate. There were quite a few offspring, so not impossible that one of the family were there. They do seem to have moved to Whitton, near Stillington for later census, but I don't know which farm. I thought I might have more replies since there were so many "Bells".
Regards
Cambria
P.S. My gf. farmed at Old Acres Hall from near the start of 20th century.

Hello

I am a descendant of Dorothy bell, Caroline's sister.  Dorothy was the mother of graddad Harry Dunn and I am his daughter Marjories son.  I do not know much about the family beyond the family tree that I am currently working on in ancestry.co.uk.  I have got back as far as Peter Bell born 1740 (my 5th great grandfather) and Elizabeth Beecroft but do not know mcuh about them - it would be great if you had any photos to share pf your ancestors - I have some of the Dunn's!

Thanks

Peter Higgs

Thanks for telling me about John Bell but I am pretty sure that's a different one and no connection with Rothbury. Good luck with research.
