Title: Paddison family in Bury/Sawtry
Post by: Curttom on Thursday 18 August 11 19:26 BST (UK)
Hi,

I am trying to find any info relating to John Frederick Paddison. He is listed on the Sawtry War Memorial as being killed in the first world war and I have found the details of his death on the British Legion site but I would like to find out where and with whom he was living in Sawtry. I believe his father was born in South Africa and at the time of the 1901 c he was living with his family in Bury Hunts. This is assuming this is the family of the J F Paddison who is named on the Memorial.

Thanks for any info, Curttom.

There is an 1891 birth on freebmd in St Ives for a John Frederick Paddison which fits the 1901 entry you found

The CWGC website has a WW1 death for a John Paddison but not a John F - also the Medal Roll Index only shows John - with the Northamptonshire Regiment

The free 1911 index has a John Fred Paddison aged 19 living in Hunts - have you already checked the entry?  Using the instructions below does not show anybody else called Paddison in the same household

Being realistic - without an address it would be virtually impossible to find who he was living with in Sawtry several years later

USING THE FREE 1911 INDEX TO DETERMINE THE CORRECT HOUSEHOLD
http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

Once you find a possible match - make a note of the county and district in which the person was living

Return to the index and in PERSONAL DETAILS - just put the surname of the family - nothing else

In LOCATION - Select the county and below it - type in the district

In OTHER MEMBERS OF THE HOUSEHOLD - show the full name of the person you have found on the index

Click SEARCH

The 1911 census is strictly pay per view so you will have to buy credits to view the full entry - the above instructions will only help to possibly show others of the same name in the same household

Is he possibly the 1916 marriage to Daisy Moore in Whittlesey??

Thanks for your help Carole. I did wonder about the Moore marriage but as yet have no way of confirming that.
I did find the entry on 1911c but my Ancestry membership has expired so maybe I will buy some credits and have a look at it.
I think the CWGC info is correct and is the same person.
Thanks again. Curttom

Daisy M Paddison married Alfred E Mills in 1923 in Cheltenham

There is no freebmd death for a John F Paddison between 1916-1922 so I think it was the right marriage

The Peterborough Advertiser reported the wounding of Private Paddison on the 31-3-1917: "Pte. J. Paddision, son of Mr & Mrs Paddison, of Sawtry Manor, has been wounded by shrapnel in the head, March 6th, and is now at Salford Royal Hospital"

(I believe that the injury was more likely on 4-3-1917 at Bouchavesnes with the 2nd Battalion, but it could well have been after the battle and on the 6th).

The medal roll lists his battalions as the 2nd and then the 7th.

His number is confirmed by the report of his wounding in the Times of 2-4-1917. His place of residence is listed as Peterborough.

His death is reported in the Official Casualy Lists of 29-8-1917 when his residence is listed as Cambridge.

I don't have a reference to his death, but I could probably find one in the local papers.

If he had died of his wounds in England - there would have been a death reg for him - but there isn't - so he presumably returned to duty

www.cwgc.org.uk shows his date of death as 31.7.1917

Yes, his earlier wounding with 2nd Battalion was not fatal; he returned to France with 7th Battalion and was Killed in Action at Shrewsbury Forest near Ypres on 31st July 1817.

The later report notes him as Killed in Action rather than Died of Wounds, etc.

There was a small thumbnail picture of him in the Peterborough Advertiser of 7-4-1917 that I can post later if required.

A second picture of John "Jack" Paddison - he looks a fair bit different with his moustache...

This one is from the Peterborough Advertiser of 25-8-1917

Unfortunately I don't have a picture of the article that would have appeared in the same issue.

Incidentally, I think this is link relates to the same Paddison family, the man to whom the article refers being John Paddison's nephew, I believe:

http://www.sawtry.net/hist5.htm

(Sawtry Historical Society seem to be fairly active and would probably have more information)

See: http://www.sawtryhistorysociety.btck.co.uk/

John's parents are on the 1911 Census at Sawtry:

Henry Russell Paddison, age 58, born at Cape Colony, horse dealer, married 38 years, 9 children, 7 surviving
Harriet A Paddison, age 63, born at ??????, Hunts
May Paddison, age 24, daughter, dressmaker, born at Chesterford, Essex

The older children, including John are not prsent and have presumably left home.

Very interesting post Magslote. I was going to pursue John Paddison's whereabouts in 1916 but you have provided the answer. Exning Camp at Newmarket in Suffolk was where the 2/4th Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment - the "2nd Line" (i.e. Home Service) Territorials - were based from June 1915 to June 1916.

As far as I can make out John Paddison was part of a group of men transferring from the Territorial battalions of the Northamptonshire Regiment to be posted overseas in mid-December 1916. The Exning reference confirms he came from the 2/4th Battalion. This group were re-numbered from Territorial numbering (a personal number bewteen 1 and about 6000) to Regular numbering (e.g. 31347) when they moved between T.F. (Territorial) and Regular. The groups numbers were alphabetic by surname from 31324 Arthur Allibone to 31354 Frederick Ward.

This is my summary of his movements at present:

- Enlisted at Northampton
- Serving in the 2/4th (Territorial) Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment in April 1916
- Transferred to 2nd battalion in December 1916
- To France in December 1916
- Joined 2nd Battalion in France
- Reported wounded per the Times of 2-4-1917, probably with 2nd battalion at Moislains Ridge, Bouchavesnes, on 4-3-1917 (Peterborough)
- Wounded by shrapnel to the head at Bouchavesnes on 4th March 1917
- Evacuated to England
- Admitted to Salford Royal Hospital
- Per P. Adv. 31-3-1917: "Pte. J. Paddison, son of Mr & Mrs Paddison, of Sawtry Manor, has been wounded by shrapnel in the head, March 6th, and is now at Salford Royal Hospital"
- Returned to France before July 1917
- Joined 7th Battalion in France
- Reported as Killed as a Private per the Official Casualty Lists of 29-8-1917 Part III (Cambridge)
- Killed in action at Shrewsbury Forest, Ypres, on 31st July 1917
- Commemorated on the YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL

- Born at Bury, Ramsey, Hunts in 1891 (OND Quarter)
- Son of Henry Russell Paddison and Mrs Harriett Arabella Paddison of Sawtry Manor, Peterborough
- Married to Daisy May Moore at Coates/Eastrea, Whittlesea on 24-4-1916

As has been mentioned, John's parents and paternal grandparents hail from South Africa.

This is his grandfather's marriage, I believe:

Grahamstown Journal 1845
Thursday November 13 1845
Married at Colesberg on Monday 10th November 1845 by the Rev. Thos. REID, Dutch Reformed Church, Mr. Henry PADDISON to Miss Isabella RUSSELL

http://www.eggsa.org/newspapers/index.php/grahamstown-journal/80-gj-1845-oct-dec.html

Henry Russell Paddision* was born on 21-11-1853 (Source: Cricketarchive.com) and died on 19-9-1939 at Grove Nursing Home, 159 Hills Road, Cambridge. In the 1930s he lived at 10 Summerfield, Newnham, Cambridge.

*Senior - note that the "Mr Paddison in the Sawtrynet article was also named Henry Russell Paddison

I suspect that the "Manor House" reference on the newspaper article may refer to Sawtry Manor House Farm on St Judith's Lane. It still seems to retain the connection with horses - now as Scallywag Riding Club.

One further piece of information - a short article from the Peterborough Advertiser of 25-8-1917:

"Pte. Jack Paddison, son of Mr and Mrs Paddison, of the Manor, Sawtry, has been killed in action after being back in France two weeks. He was attached to the Northamptonshire Regiment and has been previously wounded by shrapnel in the advance at Arles. He leaves a widow, who is engaged at Eastern General Hospital, Cambridge."

Local directories suggest that the Paddisons lived in Sawtry through the war years (they appear in Kelly's Directory of Huntingdonshire for 1914 and 1920) but not either side (not in 1906, 1924 or 1928 Directories).

Hi,

For some years now I, my wife and kids have been trying to find out more about Jack Paddison (the subject of these posts).

Our interests stem from my wife who is the Grand Daughter of Daisy May Moore and she always remembers her mum talking of her mum's marriage to Jack and how he was tragically killed during the First World War.

We were amazed to discover that other people were and have been researching Jack and are now curious to discover why.

Please feel free to reply - any info would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards, Graham

Hi, I'm the grandson of Jack Paddison's widow, Daisy May Moore. Just to round out her story:

Daisy May Moore (1892-1888)
Daisy was born in Whittlesey, Cambs on 6 May 1892, the daughter of James Moore (09/09/1868, an agricultural labourer) and Alice Mary Chalkley (31/08/1861). In the 1911 census her occupation is given as a Draper's Shop Assistant, presumably in Whittlesey, although the family were by then living in Eastrea, a couple of miles away. As others here have noted, she married Jack (John Frederick) Paddison in Coates on 14 April 1916.

My grandfather, Alfred Ernest Mills (born Lincoln, 07/03/1884) owned a drapers' shop in Whittlesey (presumably the one in which Daisy was recorded as working in 1911) and married Hilda Lucy Green (born Sudbury, Suffok, 12/1886) in 1910 and they subsequently had two children. After war service in the Balkans, Ernest returned to the shop. Lucy died suddenly from a stroke in 1919, leaving him with a young son and daughter to look after and family tradition has it that Daisy, the shop assistant, did most of that. They married in Cheltenham (where they moved at around the same time) on 1 August 1923. They subsequently had one child, my mother.

Daisy and Ernest remained in Cheltenham, he working in a variety of retail jobs and latterly as an insurance salesman. He died there on 18/02/1985 and Daisy died in Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire on  14/01/1988. She always remembered Jack Paddison with great fondness and sadness, keeping a photo of him until her death.

Hi All,

I just wanted to say thanks so much for all the info you have provided. I didn't get any notification to say I had all these replies and I haven't been on rootschat for a good while so this was a great surprise when I logged in tonight.
I was researching for a friend who is trying to find out if John Paddison has any living relatives to contact as part of a tribute to all those on the Sawtry War Memorial.
