Title: Death search for Christoher JOHNSTON
Post by: Jeanette on Tuesday 16 August 11 03:22 BST (UK)
Christopher Johnston was born in Hobart, Tasmania in c 1852 according to his childrens birth certificates.
3 children were born in Auckland New Zealand, there was no marriage between the childrens mother and Christopher.
In 1903 he spent 3 months in A tasmanian goal for leaving his illigitimate child or children. The Nz police picked him up when he left prison and back to NZ he went to face further charges.

I believe he must have gone back to Australia, where did he die?
 Cheers Jeanette ???

Hi there,

Do you have the names of his parents please.... Often the indexes for each state include that detail.  Some of the states have their BDM indexes online and those indexes are in the links for each of the States/territories resource boards here at RChat  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,399.0.html

There are many newspapers digitised at this link http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home

Many cheers,  JM

Hi Jeanette,

This may be your Christopher Johnston buried at Cornelian Bay Cemetery Hobart Tasmania.

Christopher Johnston buried 8/06/1943,Free Scotland,Section A,grave number 266.
Was aged 91 at death and was residing at 12 Knocklofty Street Hobart.
Age at death seems to fit when he was born.
Sorry it has no next of kin details.

If its him he lived until a ripe old age ;D

P.S I only know of a Knocklofty Terrace in West Hobart. They may have changed it to Knocklofty Terrace after 1943. ???

Hi Jeanette,

This almost seems too easy and there are a lot of Christopher JOHNSTONs running around, but here is a possible.

I believe I know who this man is, but whether he is yours or not is anyone's guess.

You can apply for a copy of the certificate, details are here....
http://www.justice.tas.gov.au/bdm/deaths/applyforcertificate

The information on the certificate will depend on how much the informant knew, and looking at what info should be provided, to be honest I don't think it will get you any further and would probably be a waste of money.

You will probably need to draw up a little "family tree" to understand this  ;D

His Will leaves everything to his grand niece Mary READING.

Looking at electoral rolls, also living at 12 Knocklofty Terrace were Henry Clarence READING and Mary Louise READING.  Mary died in 1997 aged 84, so born around 1913.
http://mail.srct.com.au:81/ASP/search_details.asp?RecordID=107448

Their engagement notice in 1936 says she is the daughter of Mrs. and the late Edward ANDREW.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0enk/

Mrs. ANDREW was Elsie Mary Ann JOHNS(T)ON and she married Edward in 1911.  She died in 1961 aged 77 so born around 1884.

I believe she was the daughter of William JOHNSTON and Mary Emily LINGUARD.

Elice Mary Ann JOHNSTON
Born: 3 Jul 1883
Father:  William JOHNSTON
Mother:  Mary Emily LINGARD
Registered:  Hobart, Tasmania
#1032

William's marriage notice in 1879 says that he is the "second surviving son" of Christopher JOHNSTON.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0enl/

His sister Margaret's marriage notice in 1879 says she is  the "youngest daughter" of Christopher JOHNSTON.
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0enm/

I am telling you this because it implies that Christopher had at least four surviving children.

There are two children registered to Christopher JOHNSTON and Ann HALL in Tasmania - a male child in 1856 and a female child in 1860 (neither named).

It looks like this family arrived in Tas from Ireland in 1854 on the Mooltan. Christopher, 45, Ann, 38, Thomas, 12, Ann, 9, William, 2, and Christopher an infant.

There was a Christopher JOHNSON who married in 1889 in Tas to Jane Ellen TAYLOR.  They had six children between 1887 and 1897 then moved to Victoria.  So obviously he isn't yours, but may be the son of Christopher and Ann.  This one was a pastry cook.  He seems to disappear after 1914 and Jane is alone on the electoral roll.

Many thanks for all your helpful replies !

I dont know who his parents were, but have looked at Christopher and wife Ann Johnston who arrived in 1854 and he was under 1yr.
I wonder if Thomas and William would therefore would have been his brothers.

I wonder where the great niece came to be living with him [Mary].

Was he married in Aus after 1903 and did he have a further family or child???

I can not trace his children in NZ [Margaret b1888 and William b1891 ]. Christopher jnr his eldest son i have all relavant info.      Thanks Jeanette
