This one fascinates me because I think the photographers are family.
Firstly I would like to identify the person in the photo by a date. The photo measures 95mmx140mm and is on matt paper stuck on card which is 2mm thick and dark grey verging on brown in colour. The card has been cut down to the size of the photograph in order to stick in an album. The photo is sepia coloured.
The photographers are W & J Stuart at 47-49 Brompton Road. My ancestor Samuel Robert Stuart was listed as a photographer in the 1861 census, living at Queen's Buildings just off the Brompton Road. He had an older brother William whom I know nothing about but might account for the W. Who the J could be I have no idea. Samuel Robert chucked in photography and became an innkeeper, which might also point to the fact that the business belonged to his brother.
This is all guesswork !!!!
would appreciate some expert opinions :-)

From what I have on file is that W & J Stuart relates to William John & John Stuart who also traded at one point as Stuart Bros. Stuart Bros were at 47 Brompton Road from 1865 to 1892 and from 1893 to 1911 the name above the door was changed to W&J Stuart, they in turn were succeeded by Charles and Archibald Stuart who traded from the address from 1912 til 1925.

Hi ssiii :)
Early 20th century - Old Rowley or Jim or China will be able to give you a firmer date :)
Cheers

As OR says the Stuart's traded from these 2 addresses from 1912-25 & as he's formally dressed could be anywhere between those dates.
I suspect this is the earlier part of those dates.

Hi Pete and welcome to Rootschat!
It looks as if SSiii hasn't been on line for some time, but he/she should get an email to tell them you've posted on this thread.
And if you post a couple more times - just reply to this saying Hi, or ok, or something - then you will be able to send SSiii a private message by clicking on the picture of writing in a circle under their name.
And whilst you're here, have a look round - lovely website, great members! :D

Hi there, this is ssiii and I've tried replying to petefeet twice. The first time I got a reply from igorstrav and the second time I got a message saying that petefeet's inbox is full. Can you help?
-
Not sure if it will work, but maybe the moderators would email petefeet's for you.
Sorry - getting confused!
Good luck with making contact! ;) ;)

You will be able to send a PM to Pete when he has 3 posts. Hopefully he'll be back once he has the email saying there's a post on the thread

Oh brilliant thanks! Great that this is still alive!!! Am still totally immersed but have had some upheavals so will gradually get back to all this fascinating input. Thanks to everyone who has taken an interest and given information. Once I unpack all the family history stuff I will be up and running again!

Ok first email. Forum is tricky on iPhone

And second so hopefully that'll unlock me!
Whilst writing I should say that I am the grandson of William stuart who left the uk for South Africa in about 1945 or so. I've left my file at work but I think his father was WILLIAM stuart of w and j. My father is now 90 and recalls life at warlingham and Dorin Court. I have the family tree back to the early 19th century so will be great to compare notes! I also have photos from s Africa sent after g'dads death over there.
More soon

right
I have my file and I'm not sure its that much help. William Stuart was born in 1840 in Sidbury, Devon. Not sure about brothers and sisters as the trail went cold there. I have the tree since then, attached. My grandfather was actually Charles William (known as Bill) who upped sticks to S Africa.
I've not done any work on this for a couple of years but would be interested if any new material comes to light
thanks

I'm not able to see any connection to my Stuarts. I don't have any William Stuart who was born 1840. So it looks like we are looking at different family trees at the moment.

My GRGRGrandmother Martha Ann Ray born 1840--photo circa 1861 Just about make out the photographer!!!!

Wow - I know this was a couple of years ago but I have just 'found' a photo taken by Stuart Bros. I'm not sure who the pic is of but at least the company name has narrowed the time frame so thanks.
PeteFeet I can't believe that William Stuart originally came from Sidbury. One branch of my family also came from Sidbury - Saunders/Raymonds. I photo I have I believe is of a possible sister-in-law to the Saunders branch. It's such a small world - especially around Sidbury ;)
