Title: Parentage for Ross-on-Wye ancestor
Post by: ssiii on Sunday 14 August 11 10:49 BST (UK)
I would like to know who the parents of Florence Annie Hayward were.  I think her father was Charley Hayward spelt like that.
Florence was born in 1886 at Ross-on-Wye. I know that Charley married Sarah Ellen Stuart later, in 1892 so I'm trying to find out if Sarah Ellen had had this child 6 years earlier or whether Charley had been previously married.
In 1901 Florence is living with Charley and Sarah as "daughter" aged 14.

Any insight would be really helpful.

1901 census has "Charley" as "Charles" and "Sarah Ellen" as "Ellen"

thanks but enumerators sometimes did that for Charley.  Sarah usually used her middle name in later life.  Any advance on the parentage of Florence?

The only sure way would be to get her birth certificate

I am trying to find the whereabouts in 1891 (by the way -Charley is Charles in image)

Is it possible Charles/y was married previously and wife died between census
It doesn't seem Florence would be the daughter of Sarah Ellen .

What name did Charley marry in??
What census etc is he "Charley" is his birth reg "Charley"?

I have found marriage reg to Sarah Ellen and his name is Charley - birth reg Charley - 1881 census Charley

I am trying to find whether he was mainly Charley or Charles on records.
Hoping this will enable finding him in 1891 -but haven't had any lick o far -or for an earlier marriage reg in name of "Charley"

Sarah Ellen can be found on earlier census as a servant and single -it doesn't look like she had any children

But where was Charley hiding Florence in 1891
It really is a puzzle??

Yes, it really is a puzzle.  Sarah's grand-neice insists this was not Sarah's child. I've also done all the usual hunt arounds for Florence and Charley in 1891 - can't find them.

It doesn't look like Florence was Sarah Ellen's child

There are too many Charles Haywards to find a previous marriage

We know he wasn't married at the time of 1881 census

I think the only way to solve this mystery (and to be able to research with more certainty) is to invest in the birth certificate -this will give mother's maiden name too

www.forest-of-dean.net has the baptism of Florence Annie Hayward at Walford on 25 July 1886, parents Wilson (a turner) and Jane. Walford is about 3 miles south of Ross.

In 1891 Florence, age 4, is with parents Wilson and Jane Hayward and her siblings, living in Walford, birthplace given as Walford.

I see that Wilson Hayward died in 1920, leaving a will (National Probate Calendar). It might be worth buying a copy of the will to see if Florence is mentioned.

this is brilliant detective work - thanks so much!
It looks like Florence was Charley's niece - not daughter as on the 1901 census - so she was probably just staying with them for a while.
Which census search was Florence found on? - I did an Ancestry search for 1891 but she didn't come up.
thanks again

I searched (on Ancestry) for Wilson Hayward, as the name is very distinctive. Florence is written and transcribed "Florence". If I had been searching for her I would probably have used Flo*, which covers most mistranscriptions or variations (Flo, Florrie, etc).

Finding Florence with another family member shows the benefit of researching siblings of ancestors, not just your own line. It's amazing how often you come across solutions to puzzles (or at least clues to solutions) that way.
