Hello. Please could anyone look up Frank Godfrey born in Chertsey 1886 on the censuses for 1901 and 1911? Frank is in the Guildford registration district in 1911 and in the Chertsey registration district 1901. I am interested in him and his households. Many thanks for any help with either enquiry.

I'm sorry but 1911 census requests are not allowed - please see here:

Thankyou both for replying.I presume linoline factory worker is linoleum factory!?! I've never heard of linoline anyway. Sorry, I didnt realise about 1911 look-ups not being allowed. I'll look that one up through a friend.

Hi
I think I spelled that wrong linoleum factory packer.
It is a floor covering very hard wearing and I belive you can still buy it
cheers cardiff ::)

Thanks Cardiff. :) You can still buy it. My mum is a big fan of it especially if green, to my dads horror. I always heard it called just lino so at first the word didn't click with me.

Hi
The linoleum factory was in Staines
extract from http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=22230
The coming of the railway in 1848 did not immediately alter the situation, but within the next twenty years industries were established in Staines that renewed its prosperity and determined its later development. About 1850 one or two manufactures were begun in or near the mills which were given up soon after, (fn. 73) and in 1864 was formed the Linoleum Manufacturing Company which has since then become the chief industry of the town. In 1876 about 220 and in 1911 about 350 persons worked in the factory. By 1957 it had become part of a wider concern: some 300 persons were employed at Staines and in 1956 the factory produced about 3,200 sq. yds. of linoleum each week
It closed in 1970 :)

Hey rosie99
Thanks for thatalays interested to hear about our industrial history, but sadly once again another industry hit the decks.
Anyone know where it is made now ???
cheers cardiff :)

Yes thankyou so much Rosie for researching that :). It was interesting to hear that the factory was actually in Staines. I wondered why I couldn't find reference to it in Chertsey. They still manufacture it in Kirkaldy Scotland apparently and in Italy.
