Hi
Could someone kindly look up the 1901 census for me please - trying to find the following person:
Roland Smith - age 4 - born in Jarrow (on 1891 census)
living with his Grandparents at 55 Caledonian Road -
William Smith - age 56 Ironworker (born in Scotland)
Marion Smith - age 57 born in London
could be that he died before the 1901 census - also interested in knowing who is parents are
Thanks in advance
Anne

No birthplace is shown for him on the 1891 census - it has been left blank
Freebmd has no birth in Jarrow 1886/1887 - I also checked under Rowland
There is an 1888 birth for a Roland Hylton Smith in Darlington

Hi CaroleW
thanks for your message and your help so far - I checked out the Roland you found and do not think it is the person we are looking for as I believe his Mother is the Anne Smith showing on the 1891 census with him - story goes that she had a child out of wedlock and later on she married Walter Ernest Bray who is showing as her husband on the 1901 census. Seems a mystery as to what happened to him - so I need to look for his marriage or his death after the 1891 census if we cannot find his birth registered.
kind regards
Anne

There is also the possibility that his surname wasn't Smith. It was a common error by enumerators to record grandchildren and stepchildren under the surname of the head of the household unless the householder made the position clear
Could he have been the son of another older married daughter?
The family were living in the S/Sheilds registration district in 1891 and there is only one birth for a Roland in that RD in 1886/87 - Roland Cyril Coates who was with parents in 1891

Hi Carolew
It is possible that he was born outside of the district. As mentioned I believe that Anne ( or Ann Smith ) was his mother and I have the census showing her living with her family in 1871 - aged 8 and born in Berry Edge. However, she is not showing on the 1881 census with the family - but she seems to return in 1891. It just seems a coincidence that the family story suggests she had a baby and she left the household and then returned, and then there is a Roland living in the household. Unfortunately her age differs on some of the census forms and her name is shown as either Ann, Anne or Annie so I have not found her on the 1881 census which may have given some clue as to where she was living and where Roland may have been born.
kind regards
Anne
